SPORTS SHORTS: Bobcat boys soccer starts with a win

DES MOINES — The Marshalltown boys soccer team started its season off on Tuesday with a win 3-1 win over Des Moines North.

Jose Torres, last season’s leading scorer, got his season kicked off with a bang, scoring two goals of his own and assisting on another. One of Torres’ goals was off a penalty kick, while the assist went to Tony Angel, who also had an assist.

Jesus Muñoz started between the posts for the Bobcats (1-0) and he held the Polar Bears (0-3) to just one goal on seven shots on goal, recording six saves in his first game as the MHS goalkeeper.

Up next the Bobcats will host Ottumwa on Friday in their home opener, starting 7:30 p.m. at Leonard Cole Field.

East Marshall boys win Bolts Invite

BAXTER — The Bolts Invite had to be pushed back one day due to the weather, but the day-late start didn’t hinder the East Marshall boys track and field team from coming in and showing out.

The Mustangs won the meet with a team score of 115, 14 points ahead of Denver in second.

East Marshall dominated the distance races, with Cam Hungerford winning the 1,600-meter race with a time of 5 minutes, 2.34 seconds and Cade Curphy winning the 3,200 with a 10:59.55.

The Mustangs also did well in the field events, with Justin Ridout winning the shot put with a heave of 54-2 1/2 and placing second in the discus with a toss of 143-3. Eli Anderson finished third in the high jump, followed by three other Mustangs who tied for fourth.

East Marshall cleaned up in the relays as well, winning the 4×800 and sprint medley relay while taking second in the distance medley relay.

West Marshall also had quite a few good performances on its way to placing fourth with a team score of 77. Beau Coberley and Joe Halverson each had individual second-place finishes, with Coberley taking runner-up in the 200 and Halverson doing so in the 800.

The Trojans relay teams finished first in both the 4×200 and 4×400, while the sprint medley relay took second and the 4×100 finished third.

West Marshall girls wins Bolts Invite

BAXTER — The West Marshall girls track and field team ran away from the field in the Bolts Invite on Tuesday, finishing first in the team standings with 153.5 points.

Isabelle Gradwell particularly had a great day for the Trojans, finishing first in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.28 seconds, first in the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:10.19, and first in the high jump with a vault of 5-feet.

Two other West Marshall girls took first individually as well, with Addi Moore winning the 400 with a time of 1:09.92 and Avril Sinning winning the 800 with a 2:38.14. Grace Girard finished just behind Sinning in the 800 as well.

The winning didn’t finish on the individual side for the Trojans, as the 4×400, 4×800, sprint medley and shuttle hurdle relays all finished first.

East Marshall was the next-best area finisher in the meet, taking sixth with a team score of 54.

Melinda Puumala was the highest individual placer for the Mustangs, taking second in the long jump with a vault of 15-4 1/4. Puumala also placed third in the 400 hurdles.

East Marshall got most of its scoring in the relays, with the 4×200 team taking second and the 4×400 and 4×800 teams placing third.

South Hardin finished seventh with a team score of 39, with over half of those points coming from Brylie Zeisneiss.

Zeisneiss won both the shot put and discus for the Tigers, throwing 44-4 1/2 in the shot put and 136-4 in the discus.

Cougar, Spartan girls run at Hudson

HUDSON — The AGWSR and Grundy Center girls track teams were in action on Tuesday in the Hudson Relays, and the Cougars came away placing ninth with 31 team points while the Spartans took 14th with18 team points.

Aubrie Fisher had the best finish for either team in the meet, as the AGWSR harrier won the 3,000-meter race with a time of 11 minutes, 1.03 seconds. Fisher also finished second in the 1,500 and 800.

Ali Gerbracht was the next-highest placer for AGWSR, finishing seventh in the 400, while Katelyn Pfatlzgraff placed eighth in the 400 hurdles. The Cougars also placed eighth in the distance medley relay.

Kyah Luhring was the best individual finisher for Grundy Center, taking sixth in the long jump with a distance of 15 feet, 2 inches. Hailey Wallis also placed eighth in the 100 individually.

The Spartans got most of their points from the relays, as they placed fourth in both the 4×400 and spring medley relays and seventh in the 4×200.

STC track teams place ninth at Norwalk

NORWALK — The South Tama County boys and girls track and field teams both headed to compete in the Norwalk Co-Ed Track Meet on Tuesday and both finished ninth in their respective genders.

Each team won one event, as Keith Keahna won the high jump for the boys and Callie Frakes won the 3,000-meter race for the girls.

Keahna’s jump of 6 feet, 7 inches, was good enough to win by five inches, while Frakes narrowly edged out Anjali Jones from Grinnell in the 3,000 with a time of 11 minutes, 28.37 seconds. Frakes also finished fourth in the 1,500.

Uriel Martinez also placed in the high jump for the boys, taking sixth, while Stacey Slaven took third in the high jump for the Trojan girls and she placed seventh in the 100. Nijaha Billingslea rounded out the individual scoring for the STC girls by taking fourth in the shot put.
