SPORTS SHORTS: MCC baseball ripped by No. 7 Reivers

COUNCIL BLUFFS — Jose Mieses accounted for half the hits and the only run the Marshalltown Community College baseball team got on Sunday in a doubleheader sweep at the hands of NJCAA No. 7 Iowa Western.

The host Reivers (42-5, 20-0) remained unbeaten in Iowa Community College Athletic Conference play by pounding out a total of 24 hits in a pair of five-inning wins, beating the Tigers 11-1 and 11-0.

Mieses went 2-for-2 with a double, a stolen base and a run scored in the opening game, which MCC led briefly after an RBI by Candido Encarnacion.

Six of Iowa Western’s 11 hits in the opener went for extra bases, and eight of the Reivers’ 13 hits in the nightcap were at least doubles.

Reece Blay doubled and Nick Hagen had a single for the MCC offense.

The Tigers (8-28, 6-14) return to the diamond on Tuesday with a makeup game against Iowa Valley Community College District rival Ellsworth at 5 p.m. in Iowa Falls.

Spartans top Trojans in NICL West dual

GRUNDY CENTER — Frannie Brown scored medalist honors with a 49 to lead the Grundy Center girls’ golf team past West Marshall 219-226 on Friday at Town & Country Golf Club.

West Marshall’s Brooke Snider was runner-up with a 50 and Whitney Edler had the next-best score of 55, but it wasn’t enough for the Trojans.

Lauren Dirks and Jessica Ayers added rounds of 56 and Lauren Buhrow shot a 58 for the Spartans.

Karisa Blocker (60) and Jenna Kifer (61) closed out the scoring for West Marshall.

Fleming leads GMG at Belle Plaine

BELLE PLAINE — Aaron Fleming finished as the runner-up with his round of 88 to lead the GMG boys’ golf team to a third-place finish at Friday’s Belle Plaine Invitational.

The Wolverines (416) trailed Sigourney (379) and the host Plainsmen (403) in the four-team meet, finishing ahead of English Valleys (418).

Fleming’s 88 matched Sigourney’s Dustin Haines for the low round of the tournament. Blaze Krull came in with a 94 to medal in seventh place for GMG as well.

Royals’ Ericson medals at G-R quad

REINBECK — Colo-NESCO’s Abby Ericson won medalist honors at Gladbrook-Reinbeck’s four-team meet on Friday at Oak Leaf Country Club.

Ericson shot a 51 to lead the field for the Royals, who did not score as a team. Hudson’s Morgan Kegebein (52) was second and North Tama’s Claire Schafer (53) was third.

Hudson won the team title with a 226, followed by North Tama (234) and the host Rebels (284). Ella Murphy (68) and Chloe Ritchey (69) led G-R.

On the boys’ side, North Tama defeated Hudson 193-211 for the team title. The Redhawks added medalist and runner-up medals as Derek Weber and Ryan Waller both shot the low round of 45.

Kyle Koppen paced Gladbrook-Reinbeck with a 57, while John Pointer shot 68 for Colo-NESCO.

Comet boys third at D-NH invitational

DIKE — The BCLUW boys’ track and field team took third place at Dike-New Hartford’s Simons Relays on Friday with 121.5 points.

The host Wolverines won with 180 points and St. Ansgar was second (140.5) in the seven-team invitational.

Jack Garber won the 100-meter dash (11.49 seconds) ahead of teammate Ben Paper (11.79), and Garber was tops in the 400 hurdles event as well. The Comets also claimed three relays — the 4×100, the 4×200 and sprint medley. Caleb Silver collected second in the 1,600.

The foursome of Paper, Connor Thompson, Logan Mann and Troy Dolphin won the 4×100 and 4×200, while Paper, Mann, Garber and Dolphin carried the baton in the sprint medley.

Thede tallies three goals for GC/G-R

WAVERLY — Walker Thede scored three goals and assisted on another as the Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck boys’ soccer team knocked off Class 2A No. 14 Waverly-Shell Rock on Thursday night, 4-2.

Thede was assisted twice by his younger brother Eli and also assisted on Adam Hoy’s goal for GC/G-R.

Dylan Eggleston and Rodrigue Sagbo scored for the host Go-Hawks.
