SPORTS SHORTS: MHS postpones Monday’s sports slate

2018 UNI FOOTBALL SCHEDULE

The lingering winter weather continues to delay events for all of the Marshalltown High School spring sports.

Due to the snow on Sunday and Monday, the boys track meet at Fort Dodge, boys and girls tennis matches against Des Moines East and girls soccer game against Waukee were all postponed from Monday. Also postponed is the girls golf meet against Dowling Catholic that was scheduled for today.

The boys track meet has been rescheduled for April 16, while the tennis meets will be made up on May 7. Golf will be played on Thursday at the American Legion.

The girls soccer match against Waukee will also be made up at a later day, but that date has not yet to be determined.

Van Dyk helps Panthers place 2nd

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — The University of Northern Iowa women’s golf team finished as the runner up at the Indiana State Spring Invitational.

The Panthers finished the tournament with a team score of 615, coming up just one stroke behind Loyola-Chicago.

Emily Snelling won medalist honors for UNI, completing the final day of play with a 2-under-par 70, giving her a two-day score of 147. The freshman’s performance makes her the first Panther to win a tournament outright since UNI senior and South Tama County graduate Paige Van Dyk won the Whistling Straits Intercollegiate in October of 2015.

Van Dyk finished in a tie for 10th with a two-day score of 155, the third top-10 result for her this season.

UNI football releases 2018 schedule

CEDAR FALLS — The University of Northern Iowa football team has released its 2018 football schedule, and Panther fans will have plenty of marquee matchups to look forward to this fall.

The 2018 schedule features five home games at the UNI-Dome, with the Big South’s newest member, Hampton, opening up the home slate on Sept. 22.

UNI will start Missouri Valley Football Conference play on the road against Indiana State the following week on Sept. 27, then it will return home to host North Dakota State on Oct. 6. Northern Iowa will host both the dangerous Bison, who won the FCS Championship last year, and South Dakota State, who knocked UNI out of the playoffs in 2017.

It will be an interesting start to the season, as the Panthers start off against Montana on the road on Sept. 1, then they have an early bye week before heading down to Iowa City to take on Iowa in Kinnick Stadium on Sept. 15.

This will be the first meeting between the Hawkeyes and UNI since a close 31-23 victory for Iowa in 2014.
