SPORTS SHORTS: Tiger softball splits conference opener

WEST BURLINGTON — The MCC softball faced off with Southeastern Community College on the road on Thursday in its first Iowa Community College Athletic Conference Division I games of the year, and the Tigers came away with their first ICCAC victory by winning the first game 6-2.

The Blackhawks returned the favor in game two, however, winning 5-3.

MCC (10-9, 1-1) took an early lead in game one after Chasity Jordan and Shaena Robinson led off with a hit and walk respectively in the first and Kylie Swan brought in Jordan and Robinson after reaching on a error, giving the Tigers a 2-0 advantage.

Southeastern (15-18, 1-1) came back to even it up in the second and it would remain 2-2 until the fourth, when the Tigers plated two in the inning off of a couple of Blackhawk errors. MCC would get two more in the fifth as well after Robinson and Swan led off with a single and a double respectively, giving the Tigers their 6-2 lead.

Katelyn Cantu got the start in game one, going all seven innings allowing only four hits and two earned runs while striking out three.

In game two of the doubleheader, Robinson got things started with a home run in the first inning, but that was one of only three runs the Tigers could muster despite 11 total hits in the contest. It wasn’t until back-to-back homeruns by the Blackhawks in the sixth by Chayse Lowney and Ashley Rosado that Southeastern truly put the game away.

Cantu had three hits and an RBI in the loss, while Analee Myers and Nicolette Dabbs both went 2-for-3.

Taylor Tague pitched game two and gave up three hits and only one earned run in four innings, while Cantu came in to relieve her in the final two innings, though she surrendered the game-winning home runs.

MCC is scheduled to host Iowa Western today in a doubleheader, starting at 1 p.m., weather permitting.
