MCC baseball season stalls out in regionals

CENTERVILLE — The Marshalltown Community College baseball team had its season come to an end on Saturday in the second day of competition in the NJCAA Division I Region XI tournament.

The Tigers started the day off in the regional semifinals where they faced off with NJCAA No. 2 Iowa Western after beating Indian Hills on Friday in the tournament opener. MCC couldn’t carry its momentum from the win against the Hawks into the meeting with the Reivers, however, falling 13-1 in five innings.

Then in the consolation match against Indian Hills, the Hawks figured out what ailed them on Friday and took a 9-4 victory over the Tigers (9-34), ending Marshalltown’s season.

Against Indian Hills, Jeffry Roldan continued to be effective, going 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. Marving Serrano went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run and Joel Torrealba went 2-for-3 at the plate. David Davilla pitched the first seven innings, giving up just five hits and five runs while striking out three.

There wasn’t much going right in the first game against Iowa Western, as the Tigers only managed three total hits compared to the Reivers’ 11.

With the season now at a close, MCC head coach Kim Johnson said his first year at the helm didn’t go exactly according to plan, but his guys were playing some good baseball near the end of the year.

“We didn’t have the year that we would have liked to have but we still accomplished some things,” Johnson said. “Our 23 freshman grew a ton, physically, mentally, and as young adults. We have a great foundation for the future and myself, and the rest of the coaching staff are proud of them and excited to see where we can go from here.”
