Ottumwa sweeps MHS girls tennis in regional opener
OTTUMWA — The season came to an end for the Marshalltown girls tennis team on Monday with a 5-0 loss to Ottumwa in the opener of the Class 2A Region 4 tournament.
The Bulldogs (8-3) earned 6-0, 6-1, wins at Nos. 1 and 6 singles, but the rest of the victories were not so easily given away by the Bobcats (7-7). Ottumwa will now move on to face Cedar Rapids Washington in the regional quarterfinals.
Olivia Brintnall at No. 5 singles had the closest match for MHS, as she won the first set against Leslie Saunders, 7-6, but then fell in the second, 6-1, forcing a super tiebreaker that Brintnall lost 10-3.
Maggie Grimm battled back well at No. 3 singles, after losing the first set, 6-2, she force the second set into a tiebreaker but eventually lost that 7-4 and the second set, 7-6. Kaitlyn Martin also gave a strong effort at No. 2 singles but lost to Danida Zeledon, 6-4, 6-3.
Sarah Jacobs at No. 4 singles actually had the closest match of the day, narrowly falling to Haley Grooms, 6-4, 2-6, (13-11), but their match didn’t count as it finished after the Bulldogs reached the five-match threshold.
While the season is done for Marshalltown as a team, the Bobcats still have the 2A singles and doubles tournament on Wednesday at Iowa City West, where the top-2 placers in each bracket will move on to the state tournament.
