SPORTS SHORTS: Bobcat boys soccer team sinks Newton

NEWTON — The Marshalltown boys soccer team hit the road to take on Class 2A No. 14 Newton on Monday, and the Bobcats walked out with a 4-2 victory.

Jose Torres scored two goals for MHS (8-3) in the win, while Ricardo Ibarra had two assists. Ibarra also played in goal for 30 minutes, recording three saves, while Jesus Muñoz played the other 50 minutes with three saves and two goals allowed.

Rene Hernandez and Raul Perez had the other two goals against the Cardinals (9-5).

The Bobcats next host Dowling Catholic on Friday at Leonard Cole Field, starting at 7:30 p.m.

MHS boys tennis sweeps East in finale

The Marshalltown boys tennis team hosted Des Moines East in its regular season finale on Monday, with the Bobcats winning the dual in an 11-0 sweep.

Luke Smith had the most dominant win at singles for MHS (6-5), beating Victor Burns for the Scarlets (4-6) in a 6-0, 6-0 sweep at No. 3 singles. Luke McKibben also had a strong 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles, while Jack Gruening won at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-1.

In the doubles matches, McKibben and Smith downed Burns and Wes Weichman at No. 1 doubles, 6-0, 6-2, and Gruening and Jacob Smith beat Zane Pettis and Anthony Cooper at No. 2 doubles, 6-1, 6-1. Kadin Skala and Joe Kennedy at No. 3 doubles and David Wahl and David Brintnall at No. 5 doubles both beat their opponents, 6-1, 6-0.

The Bobcats will travel to West Des Moines Valley on Wednesday to play in their district tennis meet, starting at 9 a.m.

MHS girls tennis downs Scarlets, 10-1

DES MOINES — The Marshalltown girls tennis team won a non-conference dual at Des Moines East to close out the season on Monday, 10-1.

Olivia Ryan had the biggest win for the Bobcats (7-6), beating Dania Coates for the Scarlets (5-6) at No. 6 singles, 6-2, 6-2. Kaitlyn Martin at No. 2 singles and Maggie Grimm at No. 3 singles were both in tight matches but both pulled them out, with Martin winning 7-6, 6-1, and Grimm winning 6-1, 7-6.

In the doubles matches, Martin and Emily Miller had their hands full against Valeria Cruz and Tera Richardson at No. 1 doubles but eventually pulled out the victory, 6-1, 5-7, (10-7). Julieta Cano and America Dominquez had the only sweep of the day, beating their opponent No. 4 doubles 6-0, 6-0.

The Bobcats now have a little time off before heading out to Ottumwa on Saturday to take on the Bulldogs in the start of the regional team tournament, starting at 9 a.m.

No. 2 Waukee dispatches MHS soccer

WAUKEE — Izzy Dammen scored a hat trick and the Class 3A No. 2 Waukee girls’ soccer team defeated Marshalltown 9-0 on Monday night in CIML play.

The host Warriors (7-3) also got two goals and two assists from Allie Williams, while Miranda Boyle, Lauren Gates, Olivia Lovell and Grace Terhark tallied goals in the win.

Marshalltown goalkeeper Victoria Johnson was credited with 17 saves in the defeat. The Bobcats (0-8) countered with four total shots, three of which were on goal.

Marshalltown’s grueling schedule continues with Thursday’s home match against No. 12 Johnston and Friday’s road contest at No. 6 Dowling Catholic.
