SPORTS SHORTS: Drake softball reaches NCAA Tourney

DES MOINES — Fresh off its sweep of the Missouri Valley Conference regular season and tournament, the Drake University softball team will play Brigham Young on Thursday at 5 p.m. in the 2018 NCAA Softball Tournament.

In the Eugene, Ore., Regional, Drake (43-10) and BYU (35-20) are joined by Albany (30-24) and the No. 1 overall team in the tournament, Oregon (47-7).

Drake is making its third-ever trip to the NCAA Tournament and first since 2008. The Bulldogs dominated in the MVC regular season with a 24-1 overall record and then defeated Valparaiso and Southern Illinois to win the MVC Tournament title.

UNI women’s hoops camps in June

CEDAR FALLS — The University of Northern Iowa women’s basketball program will host its annual skills camps on June 27, providing an opportunity to grow and learn with the Panther women’s basketball program.

The Tanya Warren Basketball Camps will offer two sessions on June 27, with registration currently open for those wishing to attend. The first session will be open to those entering grades 7-8 and the second is for those entering grades 9-12. Both camps will cost $70 to attend and will last from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The camps will provide coaching on technique and fundamentals from the Panther basketball staff, as well as current UNI student-athletes. The camps are designed to teach and develop players both physically and mentally to prepare them for their future basketball careers, while also giving the student-athletes an opportunity to showcase their talent.
