SPORTS SHORTS: Mustangs go 2-0 at Williamsburg

WILLIAMSBURG — The Class 2A No. 11 East Marshall softball team improved to 5-0 with a pair of wins at the Williamsburg Tournament on Saturday.

The Mustangs opened with a 12-6 victory over North Mahaska, rallying back from a 6-3 deficit thanks in great part to a seven-run eruption in the sixth inning. Kodie Hoskey pitched 2 2/3 innings of hitless relief and the Mustangs’ bats got on track in time to overcome the three-run margin.

Maria Rasmusson led East Marshall with a 3-for-4 day at the plate, hitting a double and scoring three times. Madison Farrington, Ellen Hungerford and Hoskey had two hits apiece and Juliana Arifi doubled and drove in three runs. Leadoff batter Melinda Puumala drove in two runs and courtesy runner Jayleigh Pansegrau had a stolen base and scored three times.

In the finale, East Marshall turned back the tournament hosts 9-4 in six innings. Hoskey struck out 10 and walked two in a complete-game effort in the circle, allowing four runs on five hits.

Farrington finished 4-for-4 with an RBI to lead the Mustang offense, which totaled 12 hits in the win. Hungerford was 2-for-3 with a stolen base, an RBI and a run scored, while six others had one hit each including a double for Arifi. Hoskey drove in a pair of runs and Pansegrau again scored three runs.

East Marshall’s 12-game road swing to start the season continues with Tuesday’s NICL West Division opener against South Hardin in Eldora.

No. 14 AGWSR improves to 5-0

MASON CITY — The Class 1A No. 14 AGWSR softball team won twice on Saturday at the Mason City Newman Tournament to improve to 5-0 on the season.

The Cougars defeated St. Ansgar 4-0 to start the day and closed with a 13-3 triumph over Eagle Grove.

Taryan Barrick struck out 14 in a three-hit shutout to beat St. Ansgar, and she was one of four Cougars with two hits offensively.

Rachel Sicard led AGWSR going 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs, while Ali Gerbracht, Sammi deNeui and Barrick each finished 2-for-3 at the plate. Gerbracht’s courtesy runner Abby Robinson scored twice.

Colo-NESCO rallies past South Hardin

ZEARING — Bryce Niemeyer threw 2 1/3 innings of hitless relief and the Colo-NESCO baseball team got him a win by rallying past South Hardin 5-4 on Friday night.

The Royals (2-2) scored three times in the bottom of the fifth inning to overtake the visiting Tigers (0-2), keyed by run-scoring doubles from Matthew Hill and Jacob Clatt. Clatt scored the go-ahead run on a throwing error.

Mason Lytle led the Royals with a double, a home run and two runs scored.

Snider, Schaper homer to lead Trojans

HUDSON — Brooke Snider and Renae Schaper both homered and the Class 3A No. 11 West Marshall softball team scored its first win of the season, beating Hudson 7-3 on Friday night.

Snider finished 3-for-3 with a triple, a home run and three runs scored, while Schaper was 2-for-3 with a double and a solo homer. Katie Price finished 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI, while Kayla Cripps and Grace Porter chipped in two hits apiece.

Porter pitched all seven innings for the win, allowing one earned run on seven hits and two walks, striking out four.

Bobcat freshmen split with Trojans

The Marshalltown freshman baseball team split a home doubleheader with Waterloo East on Thursday night, falling 8-3 in the opener before bouncing back with a 19-0, four-inning triumph in the nightcap.

Joe Burnes and Joaquin Torres combined on a two-hit shutout in the second game, with Burnes striking out six over three innings and Torres tallying one strikeout in his one inning of relief work.

Aidan DeVolder led the Bobcat bats with three hits, including a double, an RBI and three runs scored. Carson Williams went 2-for-3 with two doubles, three RBIs and four runs scored, while Gabe Wyant and Carson Johnson had two hits apiece. Torres also drove in four runs, Wyant drove in two and Johnson scored three times.

In the opener, Tyler Dunham struck out seven over four innings but took the loss, leaving the mound with Waterloo East leading 4-3. The Trojans tacked on four more runs in the sixth, all coming unearned to reliever Alex Thompson.

Aaron Seberger led Marshalltown going 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored. Nolan Bartlett, TJ Whitehead, Gannon Williams, Dunham and Thompson aneach added a single with Williams driving in two runs.
