SPORTS SHORTS: No. 11 Mustangs fight past BGM

BROOKLYN — The Class 2A No. 11 East Marshall softball team earned a road win against BGM on Thursday, 9-4.

Reagan McIlrath came in for relief in the fourth inning for the Mustangs (2-0), allowing two hits, no runs and no walks while striking out two.

Melinda Puumala finished the night with three hits and three RBIs against the Bears (1-2), while Maria Rasmusson also had three hits and a run scored.

East Marshall next travels to Denver today to face off with the Cyclones.

Cougars beat Trojans in ranked clash

ACKLEY — The Class 3A No. 11 West Marshall softball team took on 1A No. 14 AGWSR on Thursday in the two squad’s NICL West Division opener.

The Cougars came away on top, defeating the Trojans 6-0.

Taryan Barrick pitched a complete game shutout for AGWSR (3-0, 1-0), allowing just two hits in the win. Loran Nicholson toed the rubber for West Marshall (0-2, 0-1), giving up 12 hits and five earned runs while walking two and striking out one.

Katie Price had a double for the Trojans but was thrown out attempting to stretch it into a triple, and Emma deNeui had the lone other hit for West Marshall with a single.

Next up the Trojans face Hudson tonight, while the Cougars head to Mason City for a tournament at Mason City Newman on Saturday.

BCLUW handles South Hamilton, 9-1

JEWELL — The BCLUW softball team earned its first win of the season on Thursday by taking down South Hamilton on the road, 9-1.

Bailey Ashton went all seven innings for the Comets (1-1), allowing eight hits and one run while striking out seven and walking one.

Easton Swanson went 3-for-4 at the plate for BCLUW, driving in a run and legging out a double. Madison Ubben also had a double and an RBI on a 2-for-3 line, while Lauren Anderson went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

Cate Nason was the fourth girl to hit a double for the Comets, though she drove in three runs on the night.

Next up the Comets host their Memorial Day tournament, featuring Ballard and Belle Plaine.

HLV sweeps twinbill from Comets

BEAMAN — The BCLUW baseball team hosted HLV for a doubleheader on Thursday, where the Cyclones walked away with two victories, 16-6 in the first game and 13-4 in the second.

Logan Mann got the start in game one for the Comets (1-2), going three innings and striking out three while giving up two earned runs. Jack Garber actually got the loss after pitching 1/3 of an inning, while BCLUW had 10 total errors in the first game.

Garber had a double and two RBIs in the opener, while Blake Mann had a double two runs scored.

Colton Keller started the second game, going 4 1/3 innings, while Koty Kruse and Garber closed out the game. As a staff, the Comets allowed just three earned runs and struck out 13, but four errors led to 10 runs for HLV (2-1).

Brad Barkema had a single and a double in the second loss, while Logan Mann had a single and an RBI and Jonny Neff legged out a triple.

BCLUW next hosts its Memorial Day tournament on Monday, featuring GMG and North Tama.
