SPORTS SHORTS: Royals boys lead locals at Iowa Star

MESKWAKI SETTLEMENT — The Colo-NESCO boys crowned one event champion and had nine more top-six finishers en route to a fifth-place finish at the Iowa Star Conference track and field meet on Monday night.

The Royals scored 65 points to pace four area schools; GMG was seventh with 55, North Tama was 10th with 26.5 and meet host Meskwaki tallied 24 points for 11th place in the 14-team invitational.

Colo-NESCO’s lone conference champion was its shuttle hurdle relay team of Matthew Hill, Devin Reed, Kelly Gray and Philip Bower, which timed in at 1 minute, 2.97 seconds.

Hill had the Royals’ lone runner-up performance, clearing 6 feet for second place in the high jump with teammate Jack McKinney taking third at 5-10.

Gray got third in the 400-meter hurdles, while Bower and Reed placed 3-4 in the 110 high hurdles. The quartet of Garrett Packer, Hill, Jacob Reischauer and Brighton Clatt came in third in the distance medley as well.

GMG also crowned a conference champion in Ethan Karsjen, who won the 800 in 2:04.56. Jackson Edens placed second in the 3,200 (10:42.04) and fourth in the 1,600 (5:05.77), while the Wolverines’ tandem of Wes Steiner and Connor Casto placed second (43-6 1/2) and fourth (41-7), respectively, in the shot put.

North Tama’s top result was the shuttle hurdle quartet of Tyler Morrison, Noah Bond, Cael Even and Hale Hulme taking third in 1:05.38. The same foursome finished fourth in the 4×100 (47.14), while Morrison took fourth in the 100 (12.21).

Taurice Grant accounted for three placewinning performances for the Meskwaki Warriors. Grant was fourth in the long jump (19-1/4) and 400 (52.95) while also scoring seventh in the 200. Taté Bear came away fourth in the discus with a throw of 112-6 and Noah Seymour was sixth (109 feet). Seymour also scored sixth in the 400 hurdles (1:01.13).

Wilkening paces Wolverines at ISC

MESKWAKI SETTLEMENT — Kyla Wilkening scored a pair of runner-up finishes in distance races to help lead the GMG girls’ track and field team to a ninth-place finish at the Iowa Star Conference meet on Monday at Meskwaki Settlement School.

Wilkening scored silver in both the 1,500- and 3,000-meter runs, clocking in at 5 minutes, 31.19 seconds and 11:38.94 in respective races. She also anchored the Wolverines’ 4×800 relay to third place, finishing for the team of Haley Stahl, Angel Schewe and Maesa Groth.

Schewe added a fifth-place finish in the 400 for GMG, which totaled 29 points to lead all four local schools. Colo-NESCO was 10th with 27 points, North Tama tallied 18 points in 12th place and Meskwaki was 13th out of 14 teams with six points.

Colo-NESCO’s Lauryn Hill was the only area champion, clearing 5 feet, 2 inches, to win the high jump competition. The Royals’ next-best result was a trio of fifth-place finishes: Lindsey Riese in the 100, Grace Kettwig in the shot put and the 4×100 team of Riece, Faith Vincent, McKenzie Niemeyer and Hill.

North Tama’s highest finish came from the Redhawks’ distance medley relay team of Tessa Dvorak, Katie Kopriva, Abby DeBoef and Molly Kvidera, which placed fifth in a time of 5:00.08. Carissa Calderwood joined Kopriva, Dvorak and DeBoef for sixth in the sprint medley (2:05.55).

Most of Meskwaki’s points came from Danielle Seymour in the shot put, as she placed fourth with a distance of 32-1 1/4. The Warriors’ 4×800 foursome of Tylen Garcia, Genesis Ramirez, Ahnoong Xaivong and Marybelle Armajo combined to place eighth.

STC girls tennis closes duals with wins

DES MOINES — The South Tama County girls tennis team hit the road for its final dual of the season, and it came back home with a 9-2 victory over Saydel on Tuesday.

The Trojans (5-4) went 4-2 in the singles matches over the Eagles (1-12). Hope Werner at No. 3 singles had the largest win, taking out Claire Kayser 8-1, while Abrielle Morgan won at No. 1 singles over Katie Schmidt, 8-2.

STC swept the doubles matches, 5-0, with the No. 4 doubles team of Skyler Steveson and Jaydee Thiessen and the No. 5 doubles team of Hanah Novotny and Alexes Baeza both winning in an 8-2 decision.

The win came after a victory over Union Community on Monday, 6-3. Morgan got a win at No. 2 singles over Meghan Klein, 8-5, while Werner at No. 6 singles, Zoee Buffalo at No. 3 singles and Abigail Buffalo at No. 5 singles all earned victories.

In the doubles matches, Bri Nelson and Morgan defeated Chelsea Scott and Savannah Walvatne at No. 1 doubles, 8-4, and Zoee Buffallo and Werner took out Klein and Hannah Gates at No. 2 doubles, 9-7.

Tiger girls fall to Wolverines, 5-4

DIKE — The South Hardin girls tennis team lost a North Iowa Cedar League dual against Dike-New Hartford on Monday, 5-4.

In the singles matches, Danae Nelson for the Tigers (4-6) beat Carrie O’Connor at No. 1 singles, 8-5, and Haley Teske took out Emily Church at No. 2 singles, 8-6.

South Hardin won the doubles matches 2-1. Nelson and Teske defeated O’Connor and Taylor Lehr at No. 1 doubles, 8-5, and Sarah England and Alexiss Bradshaw defeated Sarah Hoens and Cynthia Fischer at No. 3 doubles, 9-7.

D-NH downs South Hardin boys tennis

ELDORA — The South Hardin boys tennis team lost a North Iowa Cedar League dual against Dike-New Hartford on Monday, 8-1.

Cauy Teske earned the only win of the dual for the Tigers (1-6), taking a 10-5 victory over Aaron Price at No. 1 singles. Thomas Spiehs at No. 2 singles lost to Jacob Abbas, 10-4.

In the doubles matches, Teske and Spiehs had the closest loss, falling to Price and Abbas, 10-5.
