TRACK ROUND-UP: Gradwell earns trio of state berths

DIKE — West Marshall senior Isabelle Gradwell will be in action in Des Moines next week as she earned three individual state qualifications on Thursday in the Class 2A state-qualifying meet hosted by Dike-New Hartford.

Gradwell took first in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1 minute, 8.67 seconds, then she finished second in both the 110 hurdles and high jump to round out her qualifications. The Trojans’ 4×400 team also earned a qualification by taking second, as did Renae Schaper by taking second in the shot put.

South Hardin junior Brylie Zeisneiss took first in the shot put with a throw of 42 feet, 11 1/4 inches, and she placed first in the discus with a heave of 139-7. Zeisneiss was the lone automatic qualifier for the Tigers.

East Marshall had no automatic qualifiers in the meet, but Melinda Puumala finished third in the 400 hurdles and the shuttle hurdle relay also took third, giving them a strong possibility of earning a qualifying spot.

West Marshall boys qualify five to state

DIKE — The West Marshall boys track and field earned multiple automatic state bids on Thursday at the Class 2A state-qualifying meet hosted by Dike-New Hartford.

Joe Halverson won the 800-meter run with a time of 2 minutes, 3.45 seconds, and the Trojans’ 4×400 team also placed first with a time of 3:33.28. Beau Coberley earned a state bid by placing second in the long jump, as did the sprint medley and 4×200 relay teams.

East Marshall is sending three qualifiers automatically, with Justin Ridout winning in both the shot put with a throw of 56 feet, 3 inches, and the discus with a heave 150-11. The 4×800 team also took first for the Mustangs with a time of 8:22.54.

Zakee Newman was the lone automatic qualifier for South Hardin, as he placed second in the 3,200 to earn his way to state.

Fisher qualifies thrice for the Cougars

HUDSON — AGWSR junior Aubrie Fisher continued her stellar season on the oval on Thursday with three individual automatic-state qualifications at the Class 1A state-qualifying meet in Hudson.

Fisher won the 800-meter race with a time of 2 minutes, 27.91 seconds, the 1,500 with a time of 5:09.09, and 3,000 with a time of 10:57.33.

Grundy Center sophomore Kyah Luhring also punched her ticket to the state meet by winning the 200 with a time of 26.66. The 4×400 and sprint medley relay team of Luhring, Brooke Flater, Landry Luhring and Hailey Wallis both won their events and will also be competing at Drake Stadium.

Gladbrook-Reinbeck didn’t have any automatic qualifiers, but Lily Ehlers finished second in the 400.

Grundy Center boys send one to state

HUDSON — The Grundy Center boys track and field team finished in a tie for first at the Class 1A state-qualifying with a team score of 121, but it will have to wait to find out just how many Spartans are heading to state.

Will Grames was the lone automatic qualifier for Grundy Center, finishing first in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.15, just ahead of teammate Caleb Kuiper.

The Spartans actually placed second in five different events, with Derek Ciddio doing so in the 1,600 and 3,200, Jordan Hook taking runner-up in the shot put and 4×100 relay team finishing just behind Janesville.

AGWSR had no automatic qualfications, but Liam Stubbe was the top Cougar by placing second in the 400.

Gladbrook-Reinbeck likewise didn’t have any automatic qualifications, as Matt Johannsen was the top Rebel placer by taking fourth in the long jump.
