Vest, Bobcats 5th at SEP Invite

CONTRIBUTED PHOTO • The Marshalltown girls’ golf team poses for a photo after finishing fifth at the Southeast Polk Invitational on Thursday at Copper Creek Golf Club in Pleasant Hill. The Bobcats — (from left) Taylor Naughton, Emma Younkin, Kassy Vest, Ciara Feldman, Emily Hass and Kyra Feldman — finished fifth, led by Vest’s fifth-place individual finish.

PLEASANT HILL — Kassy Vest charted a birdie and nine pars en route to a fifth-place finish and the Marshalltown girls’ golf team earned the same result at the Southeast Polk Invitational on Thursday at Copper Creek Golf Club.

Vest finished in with a round of 42-39–81, hindered only by a trio of double bogeys over a span of four holes. She played the last seven holes at even par and shared the fourth-best round of the tournament before settling for fifth on a cardback. The senior Vest was only eight shots back of medalist Jenna Krogulski from Valley, who finished at 2-over 73.

Valley was the invitational champion by a whopping 45 strokes, shooting 317 to runner-up Southeast Polk’s 362. The Bobcats placed fifth with a 386 total, not too far behind Indianola (380) and just ahead of Des Moines Roosevelt (390) and Dowling Catholic (391).

Freshman Kyra Feldman was the only other Marshalltown golfer to finish inside the top 30, tying for 26th with her round of 99. Her struggles on the front nine resulted in a 57 before she rebounded to shoot a 42 on the back nine, highlighted by two pars and the Bobcats’ only other birdie.

Seniors Ciara Feldman and Emily Hass both shot 103 to round out the scoring, while Taylor Naughton contributed a 106 and Emma Younkin carded a 113.

“We got off to a rough start on the front nine with way too many penalty strokes,” said MHS head coach Lucas Johnson. “There were some frustrated faces making the turn at No. 10, but I was impressed with just how much the girls turned it around on the back nine.

“Emily Hass and Kyra Feldman were especially impressive, combining for 24 strokes lower on the back nine. We’ll learn some lessons from the front, but as teachers and coaches we’re always looking to build grit and resilience in our kids and I saw it in my team today.”

The Bobcats now turn their attention to the postseason, starting with Monday’s CIML Iowa Conference Tournament at Mason City Country Club.
