Vest settles for 2nd, MHS third at Newton

Kassy Vest

NEWTON — The Marshalltown girls golf team wrapped up a busy week with a third-place finish in the Newton Cardinal Invite with a team score of 200.

Bobcat senior Kassy Vest had yet another great showing, finishing as the meet runner-up with a 6-over-par 41. Vest and meet medalist Maddie Schrack from Grinnell actually both finished with a 41, but Schrack won the medalist honors on the first playoff hole.

MHS head coach Lucas Johnson said Vest continues to develop into a great golfer.

“Kassy Vest is hitting it well and using her short game skills to shoot some excellent scores. She’s come so far in her course management skills as well this year,” Johnson said. “She had nothing higher than a bogey on the card which is something to be especially proud of on Newton’s back nine where there is plenty of potential to make big numbers if you’re not careful.”

Kyra Feldman had the next-best score for the Bobcats with a 48, followed by Emily Hass with a 54, Ciara Feldman with a 57, Emma Younkin with a 59 and Taylor Naughton with a 68.

Marshalltown next hosts Mason City on Tuesday for a CIML Iowa Conference dual at the American Legion Memorial Golf Course, starting at 3:30 p.m.
