SPORTS SHORTS: East Marshall makes quick work of B-F

BONDURANT — Madison Farrington hit her team-leading fifth home run and Kodie Hoskey held Bondurant-Farrar to just one hit, helping the Class 2A No. 13 East Marshall softball team stymie the Bluejays 13-0 in three innings here Monday night.

Maria Rasmusson added a 3-for-3 night at the plate that included a double, three runs scored and five RBIs, while Farrington finished as one of four Mustangs with two hits apiece. Melinda Puumala was 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI, Ellen Hungerford was 2-for-3 with two doubles, two runs and an RBI, and Hannah Birks batted 2-for-2 with two RBIs.

Hoskey struck out three and did not walk a batter in the win.

East Marshall (17-5) is scheduled to visit Grundy Center on Wednesday for an NICL West Division contest before hosting 1A No. 5 AGWSR on Thursday night.

GMG softball falls to North Tama, 9-4

TRAER — North Tama topped GMG’s fast start and the Redhawks held on to beat the Wolverines 9-4 in Monday’s Iowa Star Conference softball contest.

GMG (3-14) scored three times in the top of the first inning, but North Tama (7-10) answered with five runs in the first and three more in the second to go on top for good.

Zoe Duncan and Kelsey Vaverka both had two hits to lead GMG, including a double for Duncan and an RBI for Vaverka. Madi Krull also doubled and Angel Schewe drove in a run in the loss.

Vaverka pitched just two innings for GMG, taking the loss. Emily Vaughn allowed just one hit and one run in four innings of relief, walking five and striking out one.

The Wolverines go on the road today to Union Park in Des Moines for a showdown with Grand View Christian at 5:30 p.m.

D-NH rallies past Mustang baseball

GILMAN — The East Marshall baseball team let one get away from it on Monday night as Dike-New Hartford rallied for four runs in the top of the seventh inning to steal a 6-5 victory in cross-NICL action.

East Marshall (5-12) carried a 5-2 lead into the final frame before the visiting Wolverines (12-8) rallied.

Zach Jacobson pitched six solid innings for the Mustangs, allowing two hits and two unearned runs while striking out five. Austin Elliot allowed two hits before Justin Ridout tried to close it down, taking the loss for his inning of work.

Zane Johnson, Kam Hoskins, Tyler DeBondt and Elliot had two hits apiece. DeBondt drove in two runs and scored once, Hoskins scored twice, while Johnson and Elliot each drove in a run.

The Mustangs host non-conference foe Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont tonight in Gilman before visiting Grundy Center in an NICL West Division showdown Wednesday.

Bobcat freshmen split with Fort Dodge

The Marshalltown freshman baseball team split a pair of lopsided games against Fort Dodge in Monday’s CIML Iowa Conference doubleheader at the MHS diamond.

The visiting Dodgers won the opener 13-2 in five innings, but the Bobcats bounced back with a 14-4, six-inning win in the nightcap.

Marshalltown scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning in game two to eclipse the 10-run rule. Carson Williams, Aidan DeVolder and winning pitcher Joe Burnes each had three of the Bobcats’ 16 hits in the second game, including a double for DeVolder. Patrick Landeros and Gabe Wyant added two hits apiece, and Tyler Dunham contributed a two-run double.

Burnes struck out two and walked one in the win, allowing four earned runs on six hits.

In the opening game, Marshalltown managed just one hit as Ziek Slocum delivered a run-scoring single. Drake Davis and Landeros scored the Bobcats’ runs, and Gannon Williams had an RBI as well.

Carson Williams took the loss on the mound, allowing three runs — two earned — on two hits and three walks while striking out five in three innings.

Spartans go 1-2 at North Butler tourney

ALLISON — The Grundy Center softball team went 1-2 at the North Butler Tournament on Saturday, beating Lake Mills but falling to Clarksville and Janesville.

The Spartans (8-8) scored their lone win of the day against Lake Mills, beating the Bulldogs 15-3 in three innings. Landry Luhring and Frannie Brown had two hits apiece to lead Grundy Center, with Brown driving in two runs and scoring twice. Luhring also got the pitching win, allowing one earned run on three hits and a walk while striking out four.

The Spartans stayed close with Class 1A No. 3 Clarksville in an eventual 4-2 loss. Grundy Center scored twice in the fifth to get within 3-2, but the Indians added an insurance run in the home half.

Eighth-grader Allison Beenken drove in both Grundy Center runs with her hit in the fifth, scoring Brooke Flater and Madison McMartin who had singled. Kyah Luhring also had a hit in the loss. Landry got the loss in the circle, allowing two earned runs on four hits, striking out five.

Janesville handed the Spartans a 10-1 defeat, scoring six unearned runs. Sydney Mathews, Landry Luhring and Jessica Ayers each had two of Grundy Center’s six hits, with Mathews accounting for the team’s only run.

Tigers tripped up twice at Mason City

MASON CITY — The South Hardin softball team traveled north to the Mason City Tournament on Saturday, falling 12-9 to Osage and 11-0 to the host Mohawks.

The Tigers (1-14) piled up nine hits and a season-high nine runs in the loss to Osage. Shelby May went 3-for-4 at the plate while her courtesy runner Kassidy Winters scored three times. Cyrena Werner went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Maddie Maifield was 2-for-4 with a double, a run and four RBIs. Faith Owens was 1-for-3 with a double, a run and three RBIs.

May surrendered 12 hits, two walks and five earned runs in the loss, striking out three. She got only one out from the circle against Mason City and took the loss as all four of the five batters she faced eventually scored.

Meghan VandePol, Hannah Rewoldt, Rachel Rosonke and Owens each had a hit for the Tigers.

Royals can’t keep up with Don Bosco

GILBERTVILLE — The Colo-NESCO baseball team held a shortlived lead on Class 1A No. 10 Don Bosco as the Royals fell 7-3 to the Dons in Friday’s Iowa Star Conference contest.

Matthew Hill was 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored to lead the Royals (6-8), who went on top 1-0 in the top of the first inning before Don Bosco scored five times in the bottom half.

Kelly Gray, Sean Cutler, Mason Lytle and Jacob Clatt each had one hit, including a double for Clatt, while Cutler and Clatt delivered RBIs. Lytle stole three bases and Gray swiped two more.

Brighton Clatt took the loss on the mound, allowing seven runs — two earned — on five hits and four walks in four innings. Lytle tossed two frames of hitless relief.

Trever Brown homered for the Dons (12-5).
