DES MOINES — BCLUW senior Brad Barkema capped his baseball career with a first-team selection to the inaugural Iowa Print Sports Writers Association all-state baseball teams.

The Comets catcher was selected as a utility player for the Class 1A first team, and he was an integral part of BCLUW’s first share of the North Iowa Cedar League West Division title in over a decade.

Barkema tied with fellow senior Troy Dolphin for a team-high .412 batting average and 29 runs scored in 2018, and he had 11 doubles and 20 RBIs with an on-base percentage of .514 and a slugging percentage of .565.

This is Barkema’s second all-state selection of his career and the highest Comet placing since Wade Morris was chosen as a second-team infielder on the 2009 Iowa Newspaper Association all-state teams. He will be going to Rochester Community and Technical College in Rochester, Minn., next season to continue his career.

East Marshall senior Zane Johnson was the next-highest all stater from the area, coming in as a second-team infielder on the 2A teams.

Johnson led the substate-

finalist Mustangs with a .500 average, the seventh-highest batting average for anyone in 2A with at least 50 at-bats. He also finished teid for seventh in the state with 49 hits and he was top-15 in OBP with a .563.

This was the first East Marshall all-state selection since Nick Long was a first-team pitcher back in 2016.

Five total local players were given third-team honors, including Marshalltown senior Nate Vance, a third-team pitcher on the 4A squad.

Vance — the first Bobcat all-state player since Dylan Diveney in 2014 — led MHS to its first state qualification since 2009. He was the team leader in wins with a 9-3 record, including a 2.22 earned run average and 74 strikeouts to just 25 walks.

Vance also led the Bobcats with a .349 average at the plate, a .451 OBP and 31 runs scored. He will be attending Loyola-Chicago in the fall to play golf for the Ramblers.

Gladbrook-Reinbeck sophomore Tyler Tscherter and AGWSR senior Liam Stubbe were both named to the 1A third team.

Tscherter, a third-team infielder, hit .462 for the Rebels in the leadoff position, and he had a team-high 41 runs and 49 hits. He also went 6-3 on the mound with a 1.35 ERA and 82 strikeouts in 52 innings pitched. This is the third-straight year G-R has had an all-state player, with Joe Smoldt earning the honors in 2016 and 2017.

Stubbe is the first Cougar all-stater since Jordan Willems in 2006. He was selected as a third-team pitcher after going 6-1 on the mound with a 2.47 ERA and 64 strikeouts to just eight walks.

East Marshall senior Justin Ridout and West Marshall senior Alex Dickey both earned their first all-state honors by coming in on the 2A third team.

Ridout, the 2A third-team first-baseman, hit .404 for the Mustangs with a team-high five home runs, including two during the team’s district-tournament run. He also went 5-2 on the mound for East Marshall with a 1.69 ERA and 59 strikeouts.

Dickey, the NICL West co-Most Outstanding Player along with Barkema, earned a spot as a 2A third-team utility player. Dickey did a little bit of everything for the Trojans, going 4-0 on the mound with a 1.64 ERA and only six total earned runs, then leading the team in OBP with a .556. He also had a .356 average with 36 runs, 25 RBIs and 30 walks drawn.

Brady Gavin from Martensdale St. Mary’s, Jaden Snyder from West Lyon, Luke Ira from Solon and Luke Llewellyn from Urbandale were chosen as team captains by voting members of the IPSWA.

Gavin, the Class 1A captain, came through for Martensdale-St. Marys offensively this season while contributing on the mound. He slugged .993 on the season, was on base 62 percent of the time and held a batting average of .548. He finished the season second in 1A in home runs. He pitched in both of Martensdale-St. Marys’ state tournament games, including a complete game in the quarterfinals. Gavin has committed to the University of Central Missouri to continue his baseball career.

Snyder, the 2A captain, played an integral role in West Lyon’s success this season. The Wildcat senior hit a team-high .552, with 53 hits including 17 doubles, five triples and three home runs, in 96 at-bats. He finished the season with 53 runs scored, 52 RBI and 18 walks while swiping 19 of 21 bases. The West Lyon — ranked second for much of the year — finished the season at 28-2. Snyder is headed to Iowa City to play football for the Hawkeyes.

Ira, a senior, was a five-year starter who helped Solon reach the state tournament in 2016 and 2018. The shortstop/pitcher hit .455 this season with a state-leading 19 home runs and a 3A-best 58 RBIs. He also walked more times (25) than he struck out (20) and added 17 steals. On the mound, he had a 6-1 record and 1.73 earned run average. Ira has signed to play college baseball at South Dakota State University.

Llewellyn, the 4A captain, fueled Urbandale to its first state championship in 11 years. Llewellyn, who is headed to pitch at Kirkwood Community College, finished the season with an 11-0 record, 0.39 ERA and 86 strikeouts in 53 1/3 innings.

In the state championship victory over Cedar Rapids Washington, the 6-foot-3, 205-pound Llewellyn pitched a two-hit shutout with 13 strikeouts. It was his fourth shutout of the season. Urbandale finished the season with a 36-6 record.
