ACKLEY — The Class 1A No. 4 AGWSR softball team won its first game of the 1A Region 2 tournament over Riceville on Tuesday, 5-0.

Taryan Barrick picked up the win for the Cougars (24-7), going the complete game and allowing just three hits, no runs and striking out 14.

Carrinton Hunt was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate, scoring a run in the process, while Barrick went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a home run and MaKenna Kuper had a triple and three runs scored.

AGWSR moves on to the regional semifinals where it will take on Bishop Garrigan on Friday in Ackley, starting at 7 p.m.

West Marshall 8, Vinton-Shellsburg 3

VINTON — The West Marshall softball team won the opener of the Class 3A Region 6 tournament on Tuesday over Vinton-Shellsburg, 8-3.

Loran Nicholson pitched the complete game for the Trojans (22-8), allowing eight hits and three runs while striking out two and walking one.

Brooke Snider went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run, while Karisa Blocker finished 2-for-3 and Renae Schaper went 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored.

West Marshall moves on to the regional semifinals where it will take on No. 6 Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont on Friday in Eddyville, starting at 7 p.m.
