SPORTS SHORTS: Colo-NESCO softball a walk-off winner

MC CALLSBURG — The Colo-NESCO softball team won the first round of the Class 1A Region 2 tournament over West Bend-Mallard on Monday, 9-8.

The Royals (12-13) won in walk-off fashion, scoring twice in the bottom of the seventh inning to complete a comeback that started in the sixth, when they were down 8-4 in the bottom of the frame.

Mckenzie Niemeyer drew a bases-loaded walk to score Jenna Hill to secure the win over the Wolverines (6-16).

Rylee Purvis picked up the win for Colo-NESCO, pitching four innings in relief of Mackenna Ruffcorn and allowing four hits, two earned runs and striking out two.

Purvis also was 2-for-4 at the plate with a double, a run scored and three RBIs. Chelsea Henze finished 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI.

The Royals now move on to face 1A No. 6 Mason City Newman in the next round today, starting at 7 p.m. in Mason City.

GMG softball edged in regional opener

ALLISON — The GMG softball team lost in the first round of the Class 1A Region 3 tournament to North Butler on Monday, 3-1.

Kelsey Vaverka took the loss for the Wolverines (4-20), allowing five hits and one earned run in the complete game while striking out eight and walking five.

Jordan Yilek scored the lone run of the game for GMG, making it across the plate off a ball put in play by Madi Krull.

Vaverka had two hits to lead the Wolverines, while Belle Duncan had another.

Cougars join tie atop NICL West

ACKLEY — The AGWSR baseball team beat BCLUW in an NICL West Division game on Monday, 9-5. With the victory, the Cougars (11-4, 9-3) secured a share of the NICL West title, along with West Marshall.

Luke Starr picked up the win for AGWSR, and he and Liam Stubbe combined to strike out seven batters and walk four while surrendering six hits.

Blake Mann took the loss for the Comets (11-12, 8-3), and he and twin brother Logan Mann combined to allow one earned run and strike out seven.

Matt Pfaltzgraff and Ben Macy each had two singles for the Cougars, while Blake Mann had a two-run single in the third inning and Jack Garber had an RBI double in the sixth for BCLUW.

Mustangs mow down Belle Plaine

BELLE PLAINE — The East Marshall baseball team picked up a non-conference win over Belle Plaine on Monday, 9-1.

Justin Ridout earned the win for the Mustangs (9-14), going 6 2/3 innings and allowing three hits, one unearned run and striking out eight.

Kam Hoskins had a 3-for-4 day with a run and two RBIs, while Tyler DeBondt went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI and Wesley Hamor went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.
