SPORTS SHORTS: MHS hosting free youth football clinic

The Marshalltown football team is hosting a Friday Night Lights Youth Football Camp on Friday, July 27, from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Leonard Cole Field.

All youth entering kindergarden through sixth grade are welcome, and there is no cost for admission.

There will also be a 7th and 8th grade camp on July 26, also at Leonard Cole Field but from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Like the youth camp, the camp is free to all who come.

Iowa football hosts West Marshall Day

IOWA CITY — The University of Iowa football team is hosting a West Marshall Community Day during the Iowa vs. Northern Illinois on Saturday, Sept. 1, with kickoff set for 2:30 p.m.

Any member of the West Marshall Communty School District can purchase an unlimited number of $35 group rate adult tickets and $25 youth tickets. The single game ticket price is $50 per seat.

The record for ticket sales by one community was set several years ago by Grinnell when they sold 526 tickets.

Bobcat freshmen split with Railsplitters

The Marshalltown freshman baseball team split its home games against Des Moines Lincoln on Monday, winning the first 6-5 and falling in the second 9-3.

Gannon Williams picked up the win for the Bobcats in game one, going 6 2/3 innings and allowing three hits and three earned runs while striking out six.

Patrick Landeros went 2-for-4 with two RBIs in the win, while Alex Thompson went 1-for-2 with a run, an RBI and a walk.

Jacob VanPelt started game two and allowed three runs and three hits in five innings pitched, but the Railsplitters got eight runs in the final two innings off of releiver Joe Burnes, who took the loss.

Ethan Wertzberger went 2-for-2 with a walk in the loss, while Aaron Seberger finished 2-for-4 with a run and two RBIs.

‘Sneak Peak’ of Iowa women’s hoops

IOWA CITY — The University of Iowa women’s basketball team will host its Sneak Peak Summer Scrimmage on Friday. Tipoff will be at 6 p.m. in Carver-Hawkeye Arena’s pracitce gym, where fans can get a first look at the 2018-19 Hawkeyes in action.

Iowa returns All-American and Big Ten Player of the Year Megan Gustafson for her senior year, coming off a record-breaking junior season by averaging 26 points and 13 boards per game.

Also returning is Hannah Stewart, who looks to continue her efficiency from the 2017-18 season where she shot 49.3 percent from the field.

The Hawkeyes made it to the NCAA tournament for the first time in three years last season and the 13th time under head coach Lisa Bluder.

Doors open at Carver-Hawkeye Arena at 5:30 p.m. on Friday and admission is free.
