MCC volleyball goes undefeated on opening road trip in the Carolinas

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — The Marshalltown Community College volleyball team finished its first road trip of the season at a perfect 5-0 after defeating Fayetteville Technical Community College in straight sets on Saturday, 25-12, 25-11, 25-13.

Marija Ejic led the Tigers (5-0) with eight kills on 12 attempts, while South Tama County graduate Sadie Smith was second on the team with seven kills on 15 attempts.

Jelena Dukic had 22 assists to pace MCC, while Halee Pedro had nine digs defensively and Elena Yee and Fauneil Olander had eight a piece.

On Friday the Tigers picked up wins three and four of the year by defeating Richard Bland College (25-21, 25-19, 20-25, 25-14) and Sandhills Community College (25-18, 25-15, 19-25, 25-20).

Yee had 16 kills in the win over Richard Bland College, while Ejic had 10 and Smith seven. Yee also put up 10 digs, second only to Pedro’s team-high 11.

Chiar Mottola was the top offensive threat against Sandhills Community College with 11 kills, though Ejic still contributed 10 of her own and Jade Jenkins followed with nine.

Dukic had 37 and 41 assists in the two games respectively, and Pedro had her best dig game of the season against Sandhills with 24.

The Tigers open their home schedule on Wednesday when they host the William Penn University junior varsity at the Student Activity Center, starting at 6 p.m.
