MCC soccer wins Wells Fargo Cup
OTTUMWA — The NJCAA No. 19 Marshalltown Community College soccer team won the Wells Fargo Cup over the weekend by defeating Jefferson College in the championship game, 5-1.
The Tigers (4-0) jumped out to an early lead thanks to a goal by Kazuki Kimura, assisted by Cesar Mont, just five minutes into the match.
Kimura extended that lead to 2-0 with another goal in the 12th minute, again thanks to a Mont assist, and Joel Valderas made it a 3-0 lead 18 minutes in from an assist by Matheus Peveira.
Rafael Vacas and Peveira added two more goals in the second half to give MCC a 5-0 lead that the Vikings couldn’t overcome.
The win game just one day after beating Cloud County Community College in the semifinals, a win that also was the 100th in the program for head coach Rafael Martinez.
“I’m very proud of how our players responded to playing two very competitive matches in 24 hours,” Martinez said. “Resiliency and determination allowed our team to dominate the possession and maintain the defensive intensity for 90 minutes. We scheduled these two matches with the idea of being challenged by two quality teams and I feel we responded to that challenge in the best possible way.”
Marshalltown will be back on the pitch on Wednesday when it takes on Hawkeye Community College, starting at 4 p.m.
