SPORTS SHORTS: BCLUW blanks East Marshall, 14-0

LE GRAND — The BCLUW football team beat East Marshall on Friday night, 14-0.

It was the first time the Comets (1-1) have shut out the Mustangs (0-2) in their series since 2003.

Coby Willett was 4-for-6 passing for 25 yards and two touchdowns for BCLUW, with Jack Garber and Dalton Critchfield receiving those scores. Willett also led the Comets in rushing with 51 yards on eight carries.

Kamrin Hoskins was the leading rusher for East Marshall with 77 yards on 22 carries, and Samuel Bandstra led the Mustangs defensively with three solo tackles and six assisted stops.

GMG’s Edens wins Pine Lake Invite

ELDORA — GMG junior Jackson Edens won for the second time in as many meets with a clocking of 18 minutes, 20 seconds, at South Hardin’s Pine Lake Invitational on Thursday at Pine Lake Country Club.

Event host South Hardin won the team title with 59 points, ahead of Dike-New Hartford (76) and Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck (90). Caleb Silver led fourth-place BCLUW (112) with a bronze-medal finish in 18:39. Derek Ciddio paced GC/G-R in fourth (18:40), while East Marshall’s fifth-place finish (116) was paced by Cam Hungerford’s fifth-place result (18:42). Cade Curphy earned 11th place for East Marshall in 19:27.

Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck had three more top-20 finishers, starting with Paul Brockett in 14th, Kenny Day in 16th and Soren Cleveland in 20th.

Neifer Ralston (13th) and Henry Kaisand (15th) helped the team scoring for BCLUW.

West Marshall placed eighth out of 10 scoring teams led by Nicholas Thompson in 18th (20:11). North Tama’s lone competitor, Logan Kennedy, came in 61st.

Freshman Stahl leads GC/G-R to fifth

ELDORA — Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck freshman Taylor Stahl took sixth place in 22 minutes, 38 seconds, to lead her team to fifth at the Pine Lake Invitational on Thursday at Pine Lake Country Club.

GC/G-R paced five area teams in the final team standings, finishing ahead of West Marshall (141), East Marshall (160), BCLUW (234) and GMG (238).

West Marshall senior Grace Girard was the area’s only other top-10 finisher after she took ninth in 23:09.

Lily Ehlers came in 18th for GC/G-R while Avril Sinning was 20th for West Marshall. East Marshall’s Wendy Liera was the next-best local finisher, placing 24th with BCLUW’s Katie Thompson coming in 25th. Cora Saak came in 26th for GC/G-R.

Angele Schewe crossed the finish line in 40th to lead GMG with Belle Duncan (43th) and Zoe Duncan (44th) right behind her.

North Tama’s trio of runners was led by Molly Kvidera’s 52nd-place finish.

STC netters can’t keep pace with CCA

TAMA — The South Tama volleyball team staved off a sweep but fell in four games to Clear Creek-Amana in Thursday’s WaMaC West Division clash.

The visiting Clippers (5-3) captured their fifth-straight win, 25-15, 25-20, 22-25, 25-20.

Stacey Slaven led South Tama (1-5) with 12 kills and Madison Rohach came away with 10 kills. Jaelin Berger chipped in five kills and led the Trojans with five total blocks.

STC setter Katie Campbell amassed 25 assists in the match, while Ashlynn Ellenbecker led the defense with nine digs. Ellenbecker also went 16-for-16 serving with a team-leading two aces.

South Tama visits Conrad for BCLUW’s annual round-robin tournament today.
