3 area football teams qualify for state playoffs

There are three teams from the coverage area who are heading to the playoff postseason, West Marshall, North Tama and Gladbrook-Reinbeck.

West Marshall (7-2) is back in the playoffs after splitting the Class 2A District 7 title with Benton Community and Union Community.

The Trojans received the No. 8 seed for the 2A tournament and finished the season No. 8 in the 2A ratings percentage index (RPI). They will play the No. 17 seed Williamsburg (6-3) on the road in Williamsburg on Friday night. West Marshall beat the Raiders in the first game of the season, 27-14 in Williamsburg.

North Tama (8-1) comes in as the No. 6 seed in Class A and ended the season No. 6 in the Class A RPI. The Redhawks placed second in Class A District 7 behind Hudson, who is the No. 1 seed in the tournament.

North Tama heads to Mason City on Friday to play the No. 14 seed Mason City Newman (7-2). The Knights finished the year first in Class A District 4 and come into the playoffs No. 14 in the Class A RPI.

Gladbrook-Reinbeck (7-2) won 8-Man District 5 with a 7-0 record in the first year playing 8-man for the Rebels. After starting the year 0-2, G-R ripped off seven-straight wins to earn its ninth-straight playoff appearance.

The Rebels come into the 8-man playoffs 19th in the RPI, and they are the No. 16 seed. Gladbrook-Reinbeck will host the No. 9 seed New London (8-1) in the first round in Gladbrook. The Tigers finished second in 8-Man District 4 behind Iowa Valley, the No. 1 overall seed in the 8-man playoffs. New London also finished ninth in the 8-man RPI.
