Bobcats dropped by Roughriders in bizarre game, 20-15

After recovering an onside kick with less than a minute left — the second attempt of said onside kick — the Marshalltown football team had one last chance to retake the lead over Des Moines Roosevelt.

Unfortunately for the Bobcat faithful, that late-game comeback didn’t come to fruition, as quarterback Jacob Smith’s pass on fourth down and 20 from his own 38 fell incomplete and the Roughriders rode away from Leonard Cole Field with a 20-15 victory in this Class 4A District 2 matchup.

Marshalltown (4-3, 1-2) was only in position to win the game after senior Dylan Eygabroad hauled in a 35-yard touchdown pass on a juggling catch with 29 seconds remaining, the second touchdown connection of the night for Eygabroad and Smith.

Smith finished the night 13-for-22 passing with 146 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Eygabroad was the leading receiver with six receptions for 89 yards, but the potent MHS running game was stifled nearly all night, with Derrick Garth finishing as the leading rusher at 35 yards on 11 carries.

Roosevelt (3-4, 2-1) scored first in the contest on its first drive of the night, as Jayden Singleton hit Kobe Phanthoudeth for a 5-yard score that was set up by a 60-yard run by Sam Runkel.

The Bobcats bounced back on their next drive, however, as Smith found Eygabroad for a 23-yard touchdown after Runkel fumbled on the Roughriders’ 25-yard line.

The game went back and forth until the end of the second quarter, when Roosevelt retook the lead at 12-7 on a 1-yard touchdown run by Desmond Alexander, another score that was set up by a big play by the Roughriders.

Each of Roosevelts’ three touchdowns were either set up by a big play or scored on one, as the third was a 26-yard strike from Singleton to Semar James to give the Roughriders a 20-7 advantage.

While the big plays hurt them on defense, the Bobcats also shot themselves in the foot too many times with penalties. Marshalltown was penalized 10 times for 90 yards, including two penalties for 15 yards on the final possession after the onside kick recovery.

MHS head coach Adam Goodvin was not available for comment after the loss as he was tending to an injured player on the sidelines who was taken off in an ambulance.

Goodvin also had to wrangle his players after the game as the chippiness carried over to after the final buzzer.

In the handshake line, the Bobcat and Roughrider players shared some words and had to be separated, then again once the end-game meetings had concluded the Marshalltown players took offense to the Roosevelt players sliding in the mud on Leonard Cole Field, a field MHS still has one more home game on.

This was the first home loss for the Bobcats, one that featured nearly an hour-long lightning delay and extremely soggy field conditions that forced six total fumbles between the two teams in the final quarter and change, with two of the Roughriders’ fumbles changing possession.

Marshalltown will attempt to get back in the win column next Friday when it hits the road to take on Southeast Polk.
