PLEASANT HILL — Marshalltown senior Shakira Herrera had a part in all four of the Bobcats’ top-six finishes at the CIML Iowa Conference swimming meet on Thursday night at Southeast Polk High School.

The Bobcats, who led in the team standings after Monday’s diving competition, came away last out of six teams in the conference with 199 points — just two back of Southeast Polk for fifth.

Sixth-ranked Waukee edged No. 5 Valley, 558-544, for the team title, followed by Fort Dodge in third (341) and Mason City in fourth (327).

Herrera collected the Bobcats’ best finish in the swimming pool, placing fifth in the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 1 minute, 3.57 seconds. She also took sixth individually in the 50 freestyle, touching up in a season-best time of 27.22, and was a part of Marshalltown’s two sixth-place freestyle relays.

The Bobcats’ foursome of Cori Jorgenson, Herrera, Taylor Hrabak and Klaudia Hernandez came away with sixth in the 200 free relay in a combined time of 1:49.60, while the same quartet took sixth in the 400 free relay as well (3:56.18). Both relay times were Marshalltown’s best so far this season.

Hrabak earned eighth place in the 100 freestyle in 59.11 and was 10th in the 200 freestyle in 2:08.23. Jorgenson got 11th in the 50 free in 27.40 — her best time of the season — and Hernandez added an 18th-place finish in 28.32 in her first time swimming the event this fall.

Marshalltown’s only other top-16 individual finish was Jorgenson getting 14th in the 100 freestyle in a season-best 1:00.91, while the Bobcats’ second 400 freestyle relay team consisting of Erin Stanley, Emily Manis, Kelsey Bartles and CeCe Waltermire was 15th in 4:32.68.

Marshalltown returns to Grinnell College next week for its regional swimming and diving competitions, with diving set for 5 p.m. on Oct. 25 and swimming a noon start on Oct. 27.

The state meet is slated for Nov. 2-3 at the Marshalltown YMCA/YWCA.
