No. 6 MCC men’s soccer team blanks Hawkeye 8-0

WATERLOO — The NJCAA No. 6 Marshalltown Community College men’s soccer team handled Hawkeye Community College on Wednesday with an 8-0 blowout victory.

The secured a 9-1 record for the Tigers in Iowa Community College Athletic Conference play, which also earned the team a first-round bye in the ICCAC tournament.

Rafael Vacas got the scoring going early for MCC (14-1, 9-1) as he found the back of the net just 21 seconds into the match. Vacas would score twice more before the 30 minute mark for a first-half hat trick, and Evandro Resende added a goal in the 40th minute to give the Tigers a 4-0 lead at the half.

Taiki Kinugawa picked up the scoring in the second half on a goal in the 61st minute, then Rafael Ramos, Pedro Silva and Torachiyo Machida scored the next goals to give MCC its 8-0 win.

Kinugawa and Gerald Diaz each had two assists for the Tigers to lead the team, and goalkeeper Tom Wackens had three saves on the Red Tails’ (3-10, 1-7-1) three shots on goal.

“We are very happy we got to secure a top two finish in our conference, which gives us an important bye in the first round, allowing us to rest our legs and minds prior to the semifinal match at home,” Marshalltown head coach Rafael Martinez said. “I believe that this year’s ICCAC Tournament is the most competitive and even we have had since I started coaching at MCC, so it will be exciting to see how we, as a team, respond to the challenge.”

The Tigers wrap the regular season today when they host the William Penn University junior varsity, starting at 3 p.m.
