SPORTS SHORTS: Purdy, Bailey win Big 12 grid honors

IRVING, Texas — Iowa State junior defensive end JaQuan Bailey was named Big 12 Co-Defensive Player of the Week after his performance in the Cyclones’ win over No. 6 West Virginia on Saturday.

Bailey spearheaded a dominating defensive effort, limiting the previously unbeaten Mountaineers to just seven offensive points and 152 yards of total offense, their lowest output in 23 years.

Bailey had two of ISU’s school-record-tying seven sacks, as the Cyclones boast back-to-back seven-sack games. Bailey also was instrumental in helping Iowa State register a safety late in the fourth quarter, forcing a holding call with the quarterback in the end zone.

This marks the second-straight week a Cyclone earned the honor, as safety Braxton Lewis was the recipient last week.

True freshman quarterback Brock Purdy was the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week for the second-straight week after he went 18-for-25 with 254 yards and three touchdowns against the Mountaineers.

In his last two games, Purdy has accounted for eight of ISU’s 10 touchdowns, is averaging 286 yards per game and 347.5 yards of total offense while completing 75 percent of his passes in the last two weeks.

Stanley named B1G Player of the Week

CHICAGO — University of Iowa junior quarterback Nate Stanley has been named Big Ten Conference Co-Offensive Player of the Week following the Hawkeyes’ 42-16 win over Indiana.

Stanley completed 21-of-33 passes fro 320 yards and six touchdowns, which were caught by five different receivers.

The six touchdowns tie Chuck Long for the second most in a single game in Iowa history. Long twice threw six touchdowns in a game, while the school record is held by Chuck Hartlieb in a seven-touchdown game against Northwestern in 1987.

Saturday marked Stanley’s 11th career multi-touchdown game, and his fourth straight. He has 14 touchdowns over the last four games, which ties for the most ever over a four-game stretch in school history, set by Long in 1985.

Dunne gains MVFC Offensive laurel

ST. LOUIS — UNI senior quarterback Eli Dunne earned Missouri Valley Football Conference Offensive Player of the Week honors following the Panthers’ 42-28 road victory over No. 24 South Dakota on Saturday.

Dunne went 23-for-32 with 253 yards and four touchdowns, and he scored on a one-yard touchdown run to give him five total scores against the Coyotes.

Over the last two games, Dunne is 51-for-74 with seven passing touchdowns and a rushing touchdown with just one interception.

Dunne leads the MVFC in completion percentage at 68.4 percent and touchdowns passes in conference games with seven.
