SPORTS SHORTS: Top-ranked Spartans topple Trojans

GRUNDY CENTER — The West Marshall volleyball team lost an NICL West Division match to Class 2A No. 1 Grundy Center in straight sets on Tuesday, 25-16, 25-12, 25-17.

Addi Moore led the Trojans (17-18, 3-3) with four kills, while Teresa Disney finished with three and Hanna Hohnstein and Morgan Cripps each had two.

Hohnstein had 10 assists as well, and she and Avery Randall both had five digs against the Spartans (38-3, 6-0).

Grundy Center earned its 10th-straight NICL West crown with the victory, while West Marshall finished in fourth place.

Comets finish Falcons in four sets

CONRAD — The BCLUW volleyball team beat cross-NICL foe Aplington-Parkersburg on Tuesday in four sets, 25-20, 15-25, 25-22, 27-25.

Easton Swanson and Jade Hammers were both effective offensively for the Comets (24-11), as Swanson finished with a team-high 16 kills and Hammers followed closely with 14. Madi Ubben and Kerrigan Hatch each chipped in seven kills as well, while Ubben also led in total blocks with four.

Cate Nason was the top facilitator with 24 assists, followed by Lizzie Garber with 16, and Olivia Hughes led defensively with 19 digs, followed by Swanson and Parker Scurr with 14 each.

As a team BCLUW was 85-for-90 serving with seven aces, led by Swanson’s 20-for-20 and two aces and Ubben’s 11-for-11 with two aces.

Rebels run through Valley Lutheran

CEDAR FALLS — The Class 1A No. 11 Gladbrook-Reinbeck volleyball team swept Valley Lutheran on the road on Tuesday, 25-11, 25-8, 25-18.

Haleigh Berendes and Saari Kuehl each led the Rebels (24-8) on offense with six kills, while Meriah Wittgreve had four and Stephanie Kehoe had three. Belen Ellenberger had a team-high 22 assists.

G-R killed the Crusaders (0-18) from the back line with 30 total aces and a 59-for-66 service line. Kuehl had eight aces to lead the way, Berendes was next with six and Ellenberger had four.

ISU’s Purdy, Lewis honored by Big 12

IRVING, Texas — A pair of Iowa State football players were honored with weekly awards by the Big 12 Conference for their performances in Saturday’s 48-42 upset victory over No. 25 Oklahoma State.

True freshman quarterback Brock Purdy was named the Big 12’s Newcomer of the Week, while junior safety Braxton Lewis was picked as the Defensive Player of the Week — the first such honor for both Cyclones.

Purdy accumulated 402 yards of total offense in his collegiate debut, rushing for 84 yards and a touchdown while completing 18-of-23 passing attempts for 318 yards, four touchdowns and one interception.

Lewis led Iowa State with seven tackles and picked off a pass for the third game in a row — a key interception in the fourth quarter that helped the Cyclones secure their third-straight win over a ranked team on the road.

Big Ten football picks two Hawkeyes

ROSEMONT, Ill. — University of Iowa junior defensive end Anthony Nelson and freshman defensive back Riley Moss were recognized by the Big Ten Conference for their contributions to the Hawkeyes’ 48-31 win Saturday at Minnesota.

Nelson was named Big Ten football’s Defensive Player of the Week, while Moss was named Freshman of the Week for their performances on Saturday in Minneapolis.

Nelson matched his career high with three quarterback sacks — all of them in the first half — and leads the Big Ten with five sacks. The Waukee graduate finished with four solo tackles and one assist.

Moss, a walk-on from Ankeny Centennial, got his first start because of injuries and responded with four solo tackles, one assist and a pair of interceptions.

Drake defender receives PFL laurel

ST. LOUIS — Drake University fifth-year senior Nathan Clayberg has been named the Pioneer Football League’s Defensive Player of the Week after leading the Bulldogs to their third-straight victory on Saturday.

Clayberg finished Saturday’s 36-6 win over Butler with five total tackles, including two for loss, and a quarterback sack.

Drake’s league-leading defense has allowed only 15 total points and 235.5 yards per game in a pair of conference wins.

Clayberg is the second-straight Drake defensive player honored by the PFL after Kieren Severa earned the award last week.
