Duncan Ferch

ST. LOUIS — Northern Iowa senior linebacker Duncan Ferch has been named the Missouri Valley Football Conference’s Defensive Player of the Week after leading the Panthers to a 24-9 win over second-ranked South Dakota State on Saturday at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls.

The UNI defense held the Jackrabbits to 203 yards below their season average, limiting SDSU to only 51 yards rushing. Ferch, a West Marshall High School graduate, led the Panthers with 13 tackles, five of them solo tackles, and three pass breakups.

South Dakota State was held without a touchdown for the first time since 2013.

Through seven games, Ferch is leading the Panthers with 68 total tackles and eight pass breakups. He also has two interceptions, two quarterback hurries and 2.5 tackles for loss.
