Iowa, UNI win; ISU edged by Cowboys

EVANSTON, Ill. — The fourth-ranked University of Iowa wrestling team rode past Northwestern, 32-7, on Sunday afternoon at Welsh-Ryan Arena.

Iowa dominated the top position in each win, totaling more than 18 minutes of riding time. The Hawkeyes also enjoyed a 19-4 advantage in takedowns.

Austin DeSanto used seven takedowns and more than four minutes of riding time to win 18-8 at 133 pounds. Max Murin rode the final 3:13 on top in a 4-0 win at 141, and Pat Lugo’s ride-out in the first tiebreak was the difference in a 2-1 decision at 149.

Northwestern got wins from top-five opponents at 125 and 157 before the intermission, before Iowa rattled off five straight wins to close the dual.

Iowa wrestles at Nebraska at noon next Sunday. The Hawkeyes return home to host Maryland on Feb. 8.

UNI 28, Oklahoma 9

CEDAR FALLS — UNI wrestling stayed perfect in Big 12 duals with a 28-9 win over Oklahoma on Sunday.

UNI improved to 5-4 overall, 5-0 in the Big 12. Oklahoma fell to 5-5 overall and 1-3 in the Big 12.

At 125 pounds, Jay Schwarm wrapped up the weekend with a pin Christian Moody.

Sixth-ranked Josh Alber prevailed at 141 in the only top-10 matchup with a decision over No. 10 Dom Demas, and Max Thomsen (149) got his fifth major decision to give UNI its second set of bonus points.

Bryce Steiert (165) notched a technical fall in the second period over Oklahoma’s Hayden Hansen.

Taylor Lujan edged Anthony Mantanona 13-10, and UNI earned its fourth set of bonus points at 184 with Drew Foster’s major decision over Kayne MacCullum.

Carter Isley closed out the Panthers’ wins with a 7-1 decision at heavyweight.

Oklahoma St. 22, ISU 15

STILLWATER, Okla. — No. 15 Iowa State (7-2, 4-1 Big 12) fell to No. 3 Oklahoma State (10-0, 6-0), 22-15, on Sunday afternoon.

In the dual, redshirt senior Willie Miklus defeated No. 10 Dakota Geer for his 50th career dual victory.

Chase Straw scored a 3-2 victory to start the dual at 157, but the Cyclones dropped matches at 165, 174 and 184 before No. 6 Miklus defeated Geer 9-6.

The Cyclones host a pair of Big 12 duals next weekend as South Dakota State and Utah Valley visit Ames.
