SPORTS SHORTS: Mustangs fourth at Hudson Invite

HUDSON — The East Marshall/GMG wrestling team finished in fourth out of eight teams at the Hudson Invite on Saturday with a score of 128.

Noah Bandstra finished in first for the Mustangs at 195 pounds. Bandstra, ranked No. 3 at 195 in Class 2A by The Predicament, won all of his matches by a first-period pin. He took down Charlie Hogan from Don Bosco 23 seconds into their match in the quarterfinals, beat Ryan Zuspan from Charles City in the semifinals at the 1:13 mark, then pinned Colton Schupbach from North Fayette Valley in the finals at the 1:17 mark.

Karter Welsh at 106 and Cole Nauman at 152 both took third place in their brackets, while Kordell Negrete at 120, Dane Thompson at 126 and Tayte Nauman at 220 finished in fourth.

Tim Benson at 132, Samuel Bandstra at 145, Caden Steward at 160, Conner Murty at 182 and Isrrael Vargas at heavyweight finished in fifth.

One medalwinner for West Marshall

PERRY — The West Marshall wrestling team came in 16th out of 17 teams at the Perry Invitational on Saturday with a score of 27.

Only one Trojan finished on the podium, as Grant Nason took fourth at 138 pounds. Nason received a bye in the first round, then beat Troy Schnathorst from Carlisle by a second-period pin in the quarterfinals.

After falling by a 12-3 decision to Kaleb Olejniczak from Perry in the semifinals, Nason beat Dustin Harney from Woodward-Granger in the consolation semifinals by a 6-3 decision. He would lose to Schnathorst in the consolation finals by an 8-1 decision.

Tanner Beals at 132 earned six points by winning two consolation matches, Luke Pinnick won one consolation at heavyweight and earned four points, and Ben Kielman won one consolation match at 145 to earn three points.

STC wrestlers score seventh at Ankeny

ANKENY — The South Tama County wrestling team finished seventh out of 11 teams at Ankeny’s Bob Sharp Invitational on Saturday with a score of 117.

Aiden Waseskuk at 182 pounds and Cael Kellogg at 220 both made the finals of their bracket but ended up finishing in second.

Waseskuk received a bye in the first round, then beat Connor Vroegh from Norwalk in the quarterfinals by a first-period pin and Juan Diaz from Estherville-Lincoln Central in the semifinals by a second-period pin. Waseskuk lost to Nic Leo from Ankeny Centennial in the finals by a first-period pin. Leo is ranked No. 6 at 182 in Class 3A by The Predicament.

Kellogg also received a bye in his first round, then beat Kyle Pitzen from Bondurant-Farrar in the first period. Kellogg then took out Patrick Conley from Sioux City East in a 7-2 decision in the semifinals before losing to Nate Heckart from Norwalk in the finals by a first-period pin. Heckart is ranked No. 6 at 220 in 3A.

Logan Arp at 113, Dallas Horne at 160 and Aaron Neave at 195 all finished in fourth for the Trojans.

Rebels outlast AGWSR boys in overtime

REINBECK — The Gladbrook-Reinbeck boys basketball team beat NICL West Division foe AGWSR in overtime on Friday, 68-65.

Tyler Tscherter went for a team-high 23 points for the Rebels (8-3, 6-2) and he had six rebounds, six assists and two steals. Dylan Riffey also reached 20 points while coming off the bench, and Jackson Kiburis finished with 16 points and a team-high seven rebounds.

Alex Hames had a game-high 28 points for the Cougars (7-5, 6-2), while Luke Starr followed with 23.

South Tama boys bounced by Raiders

TAMA — The South Tama County boys basketball team fell to Williamsburg in WaMaC Conference West Division play on Friday, 51-41.

Keith Keahna had 16 points to lead the Trojans (0-12, 0-11), while Matt Wiese had eight points and Tyrin Lasley had seven.

G-R girls give Cougars a challenge

REINBECK — The Gladbrook-Reinbeck girls basketball narrowly fell to Class 1A No. 9 AGWSR in NICL West Division play on Friday, 45-41.

Taylor Gienger had 16 points, five rebounds, three steals, two assists and two blocks to lead the Rebels (4-10, 1-7), while Saari Kuehl had six points and Belen Ellenberger, Reagan Skovgard and Rachel Cooley all had five.
