West, East Marshall hoops moving on

STATE CENTER — Avril Sinning and Kayla Cripps both scored a game-high 12 points to lead the West Marshall girls’ basketball team past Vinton-Shellsburg for a 56-34 victory in Saturday’s Class 3A Region 6 quarterfinals.

The Trojans (12-7) opened the postseason with a comfortable win, leading 31-12 at the half. Karlyn Snider added nine points, seven assists and four steals, and Teresa Disney finished with eight points and eight rebounds in the win.

Kayla Griffith paced Vinton-Shellsburg (4-18) with 10 points while Lauren Murray and Lucy Howes-Vonstein added eight points apiece.

West Marshall advances to host Benton Community (8-12) in Wednesday’s regional semifinals.

East Marshall 57, Colfax-Mingo 33

LE GRAND — Madison Farrington scored a career-high 18 points as a part of her double-double and the East Marshall girls basketball team bounced Colfax-Mingo in the first round of Class 2A Region 6 play here Saturday, 57-33.

Farrington finished with team-highs of 18 points and 11 rebounds for the Mustangs (8-12), who go on the road Tuesday to face Martensdale-St. Marys (15-4) in Martensdale.

Olivia Terrones tallied 16 points and six rebounds, and Melinda Puumala put up 14 points and four boards for East Marshall as well.

Camilla Schlosser finished with 14 points and Payton Rhone added 11 more for Colfax-Mingo (3-17), which also lost its season-opener to East Marshall, 49-39.

Hudson 39, BCLUW 28

HUDSON — The Hudson defense handcuffed the BCLUW girls’ basketball team to its third-lowest scoring output of the season, beating the Comets 39-28 in Saturday’s Class 2A Region 3 first-round game.

Katie Thompson scored a game-high 12 points to lead BCLUW (10-10). Bailey Ashton and Madison Ubben finished with four points apiece. Easton Swanson had seven rebounds and Thompson brought down six more, while Ubben totaled five blocked shots in the season-ending loss.

Maddie McKenna led Hudson (10-10) with nine points and nine rebounds, and Jessica Carolan added eight points for the Pirates.
