Bobcat girls track finishes second in season opener

BOONE — The Marshalltown girls track and field team made its debut on Thursday at the Boone Invite, and the Bobcat girls just missed out on a team victory as they placed second with 103 points, just three behind the host-Toreadors.

Despite the close loss, MHS head girls track and field coach Chad Pietig said it was a fantastic showing in their first meet of the year.

“Great effort by all the girls tonight, we are very proud of the fight they showed on the track and in the field events,” he said.

MHS took home wins in six events, including four out of seven relays. The two individual victories came from the distance side, as Mia Barajas won the 800-meter run with a time of 2 minutes, 42.69 seconds, and freshman Phoebe Hermanson won the 3,000 in her first-ever high school outdoor track meet by crossing the line in 11:57.58.

Hermanson and Barajas were also a part of two relay wins, as those two along with Rachel Smith and McKenna Ainsworth won the 4×800 with a time of 11:06.94 and then Hermanson, Barajas, Smith and Priscilla Vergara won the 4×400 with a 4:37.51. Hermanson picked up her third victory in the distance medley, as she combined with Grace Collins, Mariana Ramirez and Mya Gallegos to take first in 4:45.38.

The other relay win came from the 4×200 team of Sara Trowbridge, Kierra Gardner, Alyvia Chadderdon and Abbey Welden, who won with a time of 1:57.22.

Trowbridge also had some good individual showings, taking second in the 200 with a time of 29.36 and she finished third in the 100 with a time of 13.75. Vergara had a runner-up finish in the 400 after crossing the line in 1:08.17 and Erica Johnson was second in the 400 hurdles with a 1:17.89.

Chadderdon was fourth in the long jump with a vault of 14 feet, 10.5 inches, and Duff placed fourth in the discus with a throw of 77-7.
