SPORTS SHORTS: Drake, UNI earn more MVC honors

ST. LOUIS, Mo. — The Drake and Northern Iowa men’s basketball teams both earned more yearly honors from the Missouri Valley Conference on Wednesday.

Both the Bulldogs and Panthers had a selection to the MVC all-bench team and the most-improved team.

For Drake, senior Nick McGlynn was named to the most-improved team, yet another honor bestowed upon the MVC’s Defensive Player of the Year. McGlynn was also a first-team all-conference selection, a member of the all-defensive team, and he finished second in the Player of the Year voting.

McGlynn bumped his scoring average up by nearly four points per game this season to 15.6 points per contest, and he led the league in rebounds with 8.5 boards per game, up from 5.7 a season ago. Bulldog junior Anthony Murphy was selected to the all-bench team after averaging 6.2 points and four rebounds per game in reserve for Drake.

UNI junior Spencer Haldeman was honored on the all-bench team after being selected as the co-Sixth-Man of the Year. Haldeman was third on the team in scoring with 7.9 points per game.

Fellow Panther junior Luke McDonnell earned his first postseason award by being selected to the most-improved team. McDonnell averaged 7.5 points a game this season, improving from two points per game a year ago. He also made 31 starts, compared to 11 from last season.
