SPORTS SHORTS: Terrell, Malloy honored by ICCAC

AMES — Marshalltown Community College sophomore Sadie Terrell was named the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference Division I softball Player of the Week for the week of March 18-24.

In four games during that span, Terrell had six total home runs and 11 RBIs. The Tiger shortstop from Chariton also had a double and scored six runs. She didn’t just contribute at the plate, as she had no errors in the four games playing at short.

Also earning a weekly honor was former West Marshall Trojan and current Iowa Central sophomore Kallie Malloy, who was named the ICCAC Division II Pitcher of the Week.

Malloy picked up three wins against ASA Miami, St. Louis and Madison College in a road trip in Florida, totalling a .41 ERA in the three games after giving up just one run in 17 innings. Malloy leads the Tritons with a 7-1 record in the circle.

Shayok, Weiler-Babb to Portsmouth

AMES — Iowa State seniors Marial Shayok and Nick Weiler-Babb will attend the 2019 Portsmouth Invitational, April 17-20 in Portsmouth, Virginia.

Shayok was an all-Big 12 Conference first-team honoree in his final season with the Cyclones. He averaged career highs of 18.7 points, 4.9 rebounds and 1.9 assists. One of the most consistent shooters nationally across the board, Shayok was 49.6 percent from the floor, 38.6 percent from behind 3-point line and 87.8 percent from the free-throw line.

Weiler-Babb wrapped up a successful Cyclone career by earning all-Big 12 Honorable Mention accolades. He was the only Big 12 player and one of just five Power-5 conference players to averaged at least nine points, five rebounds and one steal during the season.

Weiler-Babb finishes his career third on the ISU all-time charts in assist-to-turnover ratio at 2.59. His 344 assists rank 13th in Cyclone history.

The Portsmouth Invitational invites 64 of the best seniors in college basketball from across the nation to participate in a four-day, 12-game tournament in front of representatives from every NBA team.

Foster, Lee to be honored at State Capitol

DES MOINES — University of Northern Iowa wrestling national champion Drew Foster and University of Iowa two-time national champ Spencer Lee will be honored at the Iowa Capitol on Monday with a resolution from the House and Senate.

Foster and Lee will be ushered into the House chambers by Representatives Bob Kressing and Brian Best. Following the House vote, the wrestlers will enter the Senate, ushered by Senators Eric Giddens and Craig Johnson.

Foster became the Panthers’ first national champion at the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships since 2000 when he won the title at 184 pounds. He also earned All-American status for the second-straight year, and he is one of 14 total UNI national champions.

Lee won his second-straight by taking the bracket at 125 pounds last weekend. He outscored his opponents 55-7 for his championship and it was the 84th NCAA individual title in program history for the Hawkeyes.

Repairs at Kinnick alter spring football

IOWA CITY — The University of Iowa athletics department announced last week that the Hawkeye football program will not hold an open spring practice in 2019 because of necessary turf replacement and review of the field drainage system in Kinnick Stadium.

Because of the turf replacement project, Iowa athletics announced a Meet the Hawkeyes spring autograph session in conjunction with Iowa baseball, and a spring practice Hawk Talk with Coach Ferentz, featuring head coach Kirk Ferentz and radio play-by-play announcer Gary Dolphin.

The autograph session with select members of the Hawkeye football program will take place on April 20, when Iowa baseball hosts Nebraska at 2:05 p.m. The Hawk Talk with Coach Ferentz will take place at the VUE rooftop at the Hilton Garden Inn in downtown Iowa City.

Bobcat Tennis Academy set for summer

The Bobcat Tennis Academy returns for its second year this June and July, with classes meeting Monday and Wednesday mornings at the Marshalltown High School Courts.

The Bobcat Tennis Academy, led by Marshalltown High School head boys tennis coach and USPTA Certified School Coach James Christensen, is a non-profit corporation that aims to offer an affordable avenue for children of Marshall County to participate and grow in the game of tennis, grant aid and assistance to local tennis programs and award scholarships to tennis athletes.
