Bobcat girls tennis rolls over Southeast Polk, 9-2
PLEASANT HILL — The Marshalltown girls tennis team picked up its first meet win of the season on Thursday with a 9-2 victory on the road over Southeast Polk.
After getting swept by Ankeny Centennial in their first match of the season, the Bobcats (1-1) won five of six singles matches and four of five doubles matches against the Rams.
Emily Miller took a 6-1, 6-2, win over Annie Vannoy at No. 1 singles and Mary Kate Gruening beat Gracie O’Donnell at No. 2 singles in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3.
Madi Finch had arguably the most dominant singles victory, downing Tricia Veldhuizen at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-0, and Olivia Brintnall beat Isabel Wheeler at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-1. Grace Fisher rounded out the singles victories with a win in the No. 6 spot over Abbey Doyle, 6-3, 6-0.
Miller and Gruening combined in the No. 1 doubles spot to beat O’Donnell and Veldhuizen, 6-1, 6-2, and Finch and Brintnall made quick work of Vannoy and Wheeler at No. 2 doubles, 6-1, 6-1.
America Dominquez and Carly Streetz had to pull off a comeback to win at No. 3 doubles but they did and took out Doyle and Hadleigh Markun, 3-6, 6-2, (10-4). Fisher and Jillian Lang rounded out the doubles victories with a win over Haley Rupert and Lauren Abels at No. 4 doubles, 7-5, 6-2.
Marshalltown hosts Newton for its home opener today, starting at 4 p.m.
