WEST DES MOINES — The Marshalltown boys tennis team kicked off its season on Monday at the West Des Moines Valley Invite, and the Bobcats picked up both their first win and loss of the year.

MHS swept Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln in a decisive 11-0 victory, then the Bobcats fell to the host-Tigers 10-1.

Jack Gruening was the only player to win twice individually on the day for Marshalltown, as he beat Seth Beaman from Council Bluffs Lincoln in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3, and he took out Rafe Axne from Valley in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3.

Jacob Smith also nearly pulled off two victories, as he beat the Lynx’s Jude Ryan in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1, but lost in three sets to the Tigers’ Nick Songer, 4-6, 6-4, 10-8.

Both Smith and Gruening were named to the all-tournament team.

Luke McKibben and Luke Smith, the returning state qualifiers from last season, both went 1-1 as singles players. McKibben beat Dalton Pregon from Lincoln, 6-3, 6-2, and he lost to Valley’s Kyle Elmore, 6-4, 6-2.

Luke Smith also took a win over Lincoln’s Tyler Reiss in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3, but he lost to the Tigers’ Neil Sura, 6-2, 6-4.

Freshman Kevin Strand picked up his first win of his career with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over the Lynx’s Carter James, while Ethan Benscoter and Nic Price won a doubles match against Lincoln by a 6-2, 6-1 decision for Benscoter’s first varsity victory and Lucas Kramer and Drake Davis beat Lincoln’s No. 5 doubles team, 6-0, 6-1, for Davis’ first varsity win.

The Bobcats will be back at it today with their home opener against Ankeny Centennial, starting at 4 p.m.
