AMES — For the second time in five varsity meets, Marshalltown’s freshman phenom has finished atop the field.

Amber Henson shot a 13-over-par 86 on Monday at the Turk Bowman Invite and won a cardback tiebreaker for medalist honors, leading the Bobcat girls golf team to fifth place at the 10-team tournament at Veenker Memorial Golf Course.

Henson has finished no lower than sixth place in five meets so far this spring, and Monday’s round was equally consistent. She birdied the 98-yard par-3 11th hole, carded six pars, eight bogeys and three double bogeys on her way to medalist honors for the second time this season.

Henson’s low score was one of two for the tournament as Waukee’s Emalee Andrews carded an 86 as well. The Warriors went on to the team title with their 356, while Marshalltown was fifth with a 407 total. Andrews and teammate Meghan Doherty (third, 87) both shot a 39 on the back nine, while Henson’s 40 was the next-best nine-hole score of the day.

Bobcat sophomore Kyra Feldman finished in with a 106, junior Emma Younkin shot a 107 and freshman Norah Wilson added a 108. Fellow freshmen Sydney Faltys and Brynn Van Buren contributed rounds of 123 and 126, respectively, for the Marshalltown contingent.

The tournament kicks off a three-meet week for the Bobcats, who travel for a CIML Iowa Conference dual against Southeast Polk tonight at Copper Creek Golf Course in Pleasant Hill. Marshalltown hosts 12 other teams on Thursday for the Linda Bloom Invite at 10 a.m. at the American Legion Memorial Golf Course.
