MHS boys tennis shuts out Ottumwa

OTTUMWA — After a 1-2 start to the season, the Marshalltown boys tennis team has caught fire and won five straight matches.

The Bobcats’ latest victim was Ottumwa, who they took no time in beating in an 11-0 shutout.

The meet featured a return of a familiar face, as last year state-qualifier Luke McKibben made his return to the singles lineup with a dominant 6-0, 6-1, victory at No. 2 singles over Henry Bishop. Luke Smith, McKibben’s state doubles partner a season ago, was a 6-3, 6-3, winner at No. 1 singles, while Jack Gruening at No. 3 and Kevin Strand at No. 4 both took 6-0, 6-0, decisions.

Jacob Smith won at No. 5, 6-2, 6-1, and Jacob Eberle took a 6-2, 6-4, victory at No. 6.

In the doubles matches, the two Lukes were 6-2, 6-2, victors at No. 1, Gruening and Jacob Smith swept through with a 6-0, 6-0, showing at No. 2, Strand and Nicolas Price won 6-1, 6-1, at No. 3, and Lucas Kramer and Ethan Benscoter also won 6-1, 6-1, at No. 5.

The closest match of the day was at No. 4 doubles, but Eberle and David Brintnall still came out as the 6-4, 7-5 winners.

Marshalltown is back at it on Tuesday with a road meeting against Ankeny, starting at 4 p.m.
