MHS boys tennis sweeps Newton
NEWTON — The Marshalltown boys tennis team avoided a three-meet losing streak in a big way on Friday by sweeping Newton, 11-0.
It was the second time the Bobcats (2-2) have swept an opponent this season and their first win since defeating Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln in their first meet.
Luke Smith dominated at No. 1 singles with a 6-0, 6-0, sweep of Brady Eberline, and Jack Gruening took a 6-4, 6-0, win at No. 2 singles over Collin Hemann.
Kevin Strand won at No. 3 singles with a 6-1, 6-1, victory over Blake Sevenbergen, and Jacob Eberle took a 6-3, 6-1 win over Trent Hamand at No. 4 singles.
Jacob Smith beat Nicholas Tremel at No. 5 singles, 6-2, 6-0, and Ethan Benscoter picked up his first singles victory of the year with a 6-2, 6-2, win over Blake Baumgartner at No. 6 singles.
In the doubles matches, Luke and Jacob Smith beat Eberline and Hemann at No. 1 doubles, 6-2, 6-3, while Gruening and Strand took out Sevenbergen and Tremel at No. 2 doubles, 6-2, 6-3.
Eberle and Drake Davis had the longest match of the night at No. 3 doubles but they still pulled out a 4-6, 6-4, (10-6) win over Hamand and Baumgartner. At No. 4 doubles, Colin Schmit picked up his first varsity victory by combining with Alonzo Ceren to beat Thomas Hodnett and John Valtman, 7-5, 6-1, and at No. 5 doubles John Loney got his first varsity win by joining Carson Beals to defeat Cutter Benac and Devon Hobbs, 6-0, 6-1.
Marshalltown returns to the court on Monday with a home meet against Southeast Polk, starting at 4 p.m.
