SPORTS SHORTS: Bobcat girls bested by Valley tennis

WEST DES MOINES — A five-match winning streak reached an abrupt end for the Marshalltown girls tennis team on Thursday as the Bobcats were blanked by West Des Moines Valley, 11-0, in CIML Iowa Conference action.

The Bobcats (5-2, 2-1) couldn’t collect a set in the Valley sweep, with the Tigers (3-1, 2-0) taking all three tiebreakers to complete the win in straight-set fashion.

Marshalltown’s No. 1 singles player Emily Miller battled Valley’s Ava Torgerson to the bitter end before falling 7-5, 7-6 (8-6). At No. 4 singles, Olivia Brintnall nearly scored the first set in an eventual 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 defeat against Camryn Annonson.

In doubles play, Madi Finch joined Brintnall in the No. 2 slot and competed to within 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 of Valley’s Greta Stewart and Annonson. Finch also fought to within 6-3, 6-4 of the Tigers’ Bella Dobrinov in the No. 3 singles spot.

GC/G-R boys tennis bounces Tigers

GRUNDY CENTER — Two unbeaten boys tennis teams collided on the courts Thursday, and the Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck squad emerged with a 9-0 sweep over South Hardin in a North Iowa Cedar League showdown.

The Spartans (4-0) improved to 2-0 in NICL duals by winning all nine matches in eight-game pro sets. Two doubles bouts, however, required a little extra. GC/G-R’s Nos. 2 and 3 teams both won 9-7 sets, as Dane Zinkula and Braiden Sawyer edged Thomas Spiehs and Brock Lu, and Sloan Klar and Bryce Greiner defeated Spencer Haywood and Nathan Stanish.

Nick Voss and Cale Hendricks captured an 8-3 win over Cauy Teske and Jesse Roe in the No. 1 doubles spot. Voss was an 8-2 victor over Teske, a returning state singles qualifier for South Hardin (3-1), while Hendricks handled Roe 8-2 as well. Zinkula defeated Spiehs by the same score, Sawyer stopped Lue 8-1, Klar handled Haywood 8-3, and Greiner outlasted Stanish 8-4.

Stanley medals but BCLUW defeated

CONRAD — Lane Stanley won meet medalist honors on his home course, but the BCLUW boys golf team couldn’t hold off Grundy Center in Thursday’s NICL West Division dual meet at Oakwood Golf Course.

Stanley shot the low round of 4-over-par 39 to lead the Comets, who fell 165-188 to the Spartans. Kade Pekarek shot 48 and Ray Callaway carded a 49 for BCLUW, while Tristen Gallentine’s 52 closed out the Comets’ scoring.

Ashton Martens beat a pair of teammates on a cardback for the runner-up medalist honor, shooting 41 alongside Andy Cox and Travis Kuester. Tanner Appel added a 42 for the Spartans’ final team score.

Gladbrook-Reinbeck didn’t factor into the team scoring with just two golfers. Tysen Creswell shot 48 and Trey Eggers carded 63 for the Rebels.

Ashton leads Comets past Spartans

UNION — Bailey Ashton captured medalist honors to lead the BCLUW girls golf team to a triangular meet win over Grundy Center and Gladbrook-Reinbeck on Thursday at South Hardin Recreation Area.

Ashton carded the low score with her 45 to help the Comets capture first place in the three-team North Iowa Cedar League meet. BCLUW shot a 192 to oust the Spartans (201) and the Rebels (260).

Lili Wilson shot a 48, Kennedy Williams carded a 49 and Jaelyn Allen added a 50 for BCLUW.

Grundy Center’s Frannie Brown was the runner-up medalist with her 46. Josie Holke-Farnam (50), Lauren Buhrow (52) and Lauren Dirks (53) rounded out the Spartans’ scoring.

Ella Murphy paced Gladbrook-Reinbeck with her 58. Reagan Skovgard and Maia McLean both shot 67 and Paige Creswell rounded out the Rebel scoring with her 68.

Blocker leads Trojans to road victory

ACKLEY — Karisa Blocker captured medalist honors by three strokes and the West Marshall girls golf team defeated AGWSR on its home course, 223-229, in Thursday’s NICL dual meet at the Ackley Recreation Club.

Blocker shot a 48 for the low round, and was accompanied by scoring rounds from Whitney Edler (57), Kalyn Plley (58) and Josi Zahnd (60) for the Trojans.

AGWSR’s Kenzie Kielty was the meet runner-up with her 51. Hannah Homeyer shot a 55, Morgan Roelfs finished with a 58 and Alayna Hunt had a 65 for the Cougars’ counting scores.

Mustangs sweep triangular at Eldora

ELDORA — The East Marshall golf teams swept a triangular hosted by South Hardin on Thursday at Pine Lake Country Club, beating the host Tigers and Colo-NESCO on both sides of the ledger.

The Mustang girls were led by meet medalist Jazzy Leavy’s round of 52, which was the day’s top score by six strokes. Kennedy Boliver (62), Kayla Mommer (65) and Cami Weeks (68) helped East Marshall collect the narrow win, shooting a 247 to outlast South Hardin (254) and Colo-NESCO (307).

Sybil Below led South Hardin with the runner-up round of 58, and Emmy Hostetler shot 61 to pace the Royals.

On the boys side, East Marshall had four of the best five scores of the day to post a comfortable victory. The Mustangs shot 186 to distance themselves from South Hardin (226) and Colo-NESCO (284), led by medalist Seth Freese (43) and runner-up Brayden Fahrni (45).

Eric Ommen added a 47 and Ethan Espenscheid shot 51 for East Marshall to round out the team scoring.

South Hardin was led by a 47 from Dalton Lake, while Emery Kruse carded a 65 to lead Colo-NESCO.

GMG splits conference meet with Dons

CONRAD — Ryan Hunt captured medalist honors and the GMG boys golf team defeated Don Bosco 173-177 in Tuesday’s Iowa Star Conference dual at Oakwood Golf Course.

Hunt shot a 41 to claim the low round of the day, leading GMG to a victory. Aaron Fleming shot 43, Blaze Krull came in with a 44, and Brayden Peterson put up a 45 for the Wolverines.

Mason Denton led Don Bosco with the runner-up round of 42.

The Dons dominated on the girls side, winning 215-280 and sweeping the medals. Marissa McFadden shot 51 and Madelyn Reagan added a 53 for Don Bosco’s medalist rounds.

GMG was led by a 67 from Lily Harris and a 68 from Jayden Hessenius. Rachel Slifer (72) and Jenna Yilek (73) completed the scoring for the Wolverines.
