SPORTS SHORTS: Fleming medals in GMG golf victory

Aaron Fleming shot a medalist round of 43 to lead the GMG boys golf team to a victory over host East Marshall on Monday at Wandering Creek Golf Course.

Fleming edged out East Marshall’s Eric Ommen and Seth Freese for the low round, as both Mustangs shot 44. Brayden Fahrni added a 45 for East Marshall, but GMG took the team battle 193-197.

Kolton Gill contributed a 47 for GMG, Kamrin Chizek shot 49 and Ryan Hunt rounded it out for the Wolverines with his 54.

Tyson Creswell was Gladbrook-Reinbeck’s lone representative, shooting a 53.

On the girls’ side, East Marshall won a triangular with its 245 team total, defeating Gladbrook-Reinbeck (254) and GMG (265) behind medalist Kayla Mommer’s 56 and runner-up Jazzy Leavy’s 58.

Rachael McAnulty added a 61 for the Mustangs and Cami Weeks closed the scoring with a 70.

G-R was paced by a 61 from Ella Murphy and a 62 from Paige Creswell. Maia McLean carded a 65 for the Rebels and Taylor Frischmeyer finished out with a 66.

Maya Goos (62) and Jenna Yilek (64) led GMG, with Jadyn Hessenius (69) and Megan Kohn (70) completing the scoring.

GC/G-R boys tennis cruises to 2-0 start

HAMPTON — The Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck boys tennis team improved to 2-0 with a 9-0 sweep of Hampton-Dumont-CAL on Monday night.

Landon Graham, Braiden Sawyer and Bryce Greiner each won 8-1 pro sets for the most convincing singles victories for GC/G-R, while Nick Voss was an 8-3 winner over Kian Gibson at No. 1 singles. Sloan Klar captured an 8-4 win at No. 5 and Dane Zinkula clinged to an 8-6 win at No. 3.

Voss and Graham teamed up for an 8-2 triumph at No. 1 doubles over Gibson and Josh Kew, while Zinkula and Sawyer scored an 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles over Cole Walker and David Whipple. Klar and Greiner added an 8-5 victory at No. 3 to complete the sweep.

The Spartans are off for a week before hosting Union Community next Monday in Grundy Center.

West Marshall swept by Spartan golf

STATE CENTER — Grundy Center freshman Ashton Martens captured meet medalist honors as the defending Class 1A state champion Spartans opened the season with an NICL West Division dual meet victory over West Marshall, 169-180.

The host Trojans got a runner-up medalist performance from Jake Vawter, whose 5-over-par round of 40 trailed only Martens’ 39.

Conley Petermeier contributed a 45 for West Marshall, while Jorgen Sogge shot 46 and Caleb Keigan carded 49 to close out the Trojan scoring.

Martens was accompanied by Dexter Whitehill and Travis Kuester with 43s and a 44 from Matthew Sternhagen.

On the girls’ side, Grundy Center completed the sweep with a 199-220 victory over West Marshall. The Spartans’ Josie Holke-Farnam scored medalist honors with her round of 47.

West Marshall’s Karisa Blocker captured runner-up medalist honors on a cardback, taking second place with her 49. Jaiden Hart had a 53, Josi Zahnd shot 56 and Whitney Edler carded 62 for the Trojans’ scoring rounds.

Holke-Farnham and Frannie Brown (49) led the visiting Spartans, while Lauren Dirks (50) and Lauren Krausman (53) closed out Grundy Center’s scoring.
