SPORTS SHORTS: GC/G-R girls netters down Wolverines

GRUNDY CENTER — The Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck girls tennis team improved to 4-1 with its fourth-straight win, defeating Dike-New Hartford 7-2 on Thursday night.

The Spartans captured a 5-1 advantage through singles play to seal the match, highlighted by Erika Johnson’s shutout win over Alli Fobian, 8-0, at No. 4 singles. Alivia Brandhorst tallied an 8-1 victory at No. 6, Whitney Laube won 8-2 at No. 5, while Leslie Homeister made off with an 8-3 triumph over Emily Church in the No. 1 spot.

Emerson Kracht won the closest contest of singles competition, beating Audrey Rickert 9-8 in the No. 3 bout.

Kracht and Johnson held off Church and Fobian 8-6 at No. 2 doubles, while Laube and Brandhorst rolled to an 8-1 win over Payton Mills and Madyson Broten at No. 3 doubles.

Rebels net ranked win over Denver

DENVER — Belen Ellenberger and Jacque Kuester scored goals as the Class 1A No. 9 Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck girls soccer team remained unbeaten and unscored upon after a 2-0 triumph over No. 15 Denver on Thursday night.

The Rebels (5-0) have scored 24 goals to their opponents’ zero so far this spring. Carsen Hamann made 12 saves in net for GC/G-R, which countered with eight shots on goal of their own.

Maddie McMartin assisted on both Rebel goals in the win.

Castrejon helps STC boys rip Hawks

TAMA — Jonathan Castrejon tallied six goals and four assists as the South Tama County boys soccer team dismantled West Delaware 11-1 in Thursday’s WaMaC Conference clash.

Jeffrey Fuentes added two goals and one assist, while Osmar Galvez and Tony Nunez both had one goal and one assist in the lopsided win that ended 10 minutes early because of the mercy rule.

Uriel Martinez also scored a goal for STC (4-2), Jorge Davila tallied two assists and Fabian Padilla added one assist in the victory. Freshman goalkeeper Guillermo Garcia registered two saves on three shots on goal by the Hawks (0-7).

GC/G-R boys defeated by Decorah

REINBECK — Decorah denied the Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck boys soccer team its fourth-straight win, beating the Rebels 3-1 on Thursday.

The visiting Vikings (6-3) got their fifth consecutive win in the process, scoring three times on seven shots on goal. Kale Hasselman made seven saves in net for the Rebels (3-2).

Aiden Wyatt scored the lone goal for GC/G-R on an assist from Eli Thede.

STC boys tennis topped by Marion

MARION — The South Tama County boys tennis team fell to 0-5 on the year with Thursday’s 8-1 loss at Marion (3-3).

Wes Upah scored the lone with for the Trojans, beating Bryan Crow in the No. 2 singles match, 10-7.

Each STC singles player won at least four games but couldn’t get over the hump. Dallas Horne was defeated 11-9 by Austin Fritz at No. 3 singles, while Abdul Musalif Mohamad Bokhori lost 10-6 to Kyle Mueller at No. 1.

Upah and Lance Davenport battled to within 10-7 of Bryan Crow and Tanner Shindelar at No. 2 doubles, while Lincoln Kingbird and Kalem Schrock lost 10-6 at No. 3 doubles.
