SPORTS SHORTS: MHS boys sixth at DM East Invite

DES MOINES — The Marshalltown boys track and field team finished sixth out of as many teams with 33 points on Monday at the Des Moines East Invitational.

The top finish for the Bobcats came from the 4×800-meter relay, where the team of Bennett O’Hare, Zach Bitker, Brent Johnson and Marshall Weeden placed second in a time of 8 minutes, 52.71 seconds.

Gabe Wyant finished in third in the long jump with a vault of 18 feet, 7 1/4 inches, Kyle Griego was fourth in the discus with a heave of 115 feet. Jordan Anderson took fourth in the shot put at 41-11 1/2, Weeden was fourth in the 1,600 after crossing the line in 4:54.16, and Deonte’ Dean was fourth in the 200 with a 24.17 and fifth in the 100 with an 11.96.

The Bobcats host their lone home meet on Thursday with the Kenny Dean Invitational at 4:15 p.m.

Pella topples Bobcat girls in opener

PELLA — The Marshalltown girls soccer team started its season with a 9-0 loss to Class 2A No. 3 Pella on Monday.

Grace Held had five goals to pace the Dutch (1-0).

The Bobcats (0-1) are off for the next week until they face Waterloo Christian next Monday in Waterloo.

Trojan boys take fourth at Boone Invite

BOONE — The West Marshall boys track and field team placed fourth in the Boone Invitational on Monday.

The Trojans had first-place finishes in three different relays. The sprint medley relay team of Brian Morrison, Josh Larsen, Jake Tollefson and Cameron Bannister took first in a time of 1 minute, 38.49 seconds, then those four won the 4×200 after crossing the line in 1:35.73.

Tollefson, Larsen, Bannister and Jarrin Goecke then won the 4×100 in a time of 46.23 seconds.

The shuttle hurdle relay of Nat Markle, Jake Storjohann, Brayden Evertson and Blaise Buchard took second, while Quinton Ward took third in the discus, Goecke was third in the 100, Colby McMorran was third in the 1,600 and the 200 and Cael Kline was third in the 800.
