Bobcat netters fall in rematch with Ankeny

ANKENY — The abbreviated invitational format did the Marshalltown girls tennis team no favors on Friday at the Ankeny Tennis Center.

The Bobcats went 1-2 at the Ankeny Invite, falling to the host Hawks in a rematch of a regular-season meeting from 10 days earlier. Marshalltown (7-5) also suffered a sweep at the hands of Urbandale before closing the tournament with a win over Des Moines Roosevelt.

Ankeny had one dual meet win prior to beating Marshalltown, 7-4, in the Bobcats’ first match of the day. The Hawks’ four-match losing streak included an 8-3 defeat at the hands of the Bobcats, but one addition to Ankeny’s lineup and the 8-game pro set format made enough of an impact to change the outcome in the rematch.

Even though Ankeny’s new No. 3 singles player Megan Somerfeld was defeated handily by Marshalltown’s Madi Finch, 8-0, the rest of the Hawks behind her had more luck than the last time they faced the Bobcats. Morgan Luther, Reilly Johnson and Lydia Blatt won the Nos. 4-5-6 singles matches to help Ankeny score a split heading into doubles play, and the tables remained turned.

Emily Miller, Mary Kate Gruening and Finch got the singles wins for Marshalltown, and it was Finch and Olivia Brintnall that accounted for the Bobcats’ only doubles victory against the Hawks. Ankeny won four of five pairs matches to make away with the 7-4 victory.

Urbandale registered four singles shutouts and another in doubles to down the Bobcats 11-0. Grace Fisher gave the Bobcats their best chance at a singles victory in a 9-7 loss to Ashley Pearson at No. 5, while Brintnall fell 8-5 to Reese Dial at No. 4. The rest were 8-0 triumphs for the J-Hawks.

In doubles play, Marshalltown’s No. 5 pairing of America Dominguez and Regan Smith had the most success in an eventual loss, 8-6, while Finch and Brintnall were within 8-5 of Dial and Pearson from the No. 2 double spot.

The Bobcats bounced back to finish the day with a 7-4 triumph over Des Moines Roosevelt, highlighted by Fisher’s 8-0 shutout of Kate Rodgers at No. 5 singles and Hel Ter’s hard-fought 9-8 (7-5) marathon victory over Greta Lelwica at No. 6.

Gruening and Brintnall also notched singles wins, while Marshalltown’s top three doubles teams were victors as well. Miller and Gruening got an 8-5 win at No. 1, Finch and Brintnall finished the day 2-1 with their 8-2 win, and Fisher teamed with Jillian Lang for an 8-3 defeat of Rodgers and Anna Bright at No. 3.

The Bobcat girls tennis team closes regular-season play this week with Monday’s home match against Waverly-Shell Rock and Tuesday’s road dual at Ames. Marshalltown’s Class 2A regional opener is May 11 at home against Waterloo East.
