Comets’ Hand medals, BCLUW 2nd at home

UNION — The BCLUW girls golf team finished in second in its home tournament on Monday at the South Hardin Recreation Area with a score of 207.

The Comets were led by senior Abigail Hand, who won her home tournament on a cardback after shooting a 46. When Hand realized she was going to be the tournament champion, she started to jump up and down with joy.

“I was so excited, I was praising God,” she said. “Through the whole meet I was singing this song, which I absolutely hate, but it’s a hymn called Hallelujah, and it was amazing.”

Scores were inflated for most of the girls throughout the day, with only three golfers finishing with a score under 50, and Hand said she was on track for a tough round as well but she was able to turn it around.

“I feel like I started really bad but came back and recovered well,” she said. “The best thing about getting down is how you get up.”

Finishing behind Hand for BCLUW was senior Jaelyn Allen with a 50, then came Lily Wilson with a 53 and Skye Teckenburg with a 58.

West Marshall came in fourth in the meet with a 230. Karissa Blocker was the top Trojan finisher with a 54, followed by Whitney Edler with a 58 and Jaiden Hart and Josi Zahnd with a 59 each.

East Marshall finished in fifth with a team score of 234. Jazy Leavy finished tied for the sixth-best score of the day with a 53 for the Mustangs. Kayla Mommer was next with a 58, followed by Rachel McAnulty with a 61 and Cami Weeks with a 62.

Gladbrook-Reinbeck came in sixth on the team standings with a 249. Reagan Skovgard was the Rebel’s top finisher with a 58, followed by Ella Murphy with a 60, Maia McLean with a 65 and Paige Creswell with a 66.

GMG was the 10th-place finisher after carding a 278. Megan Kohn was the top Wolverine with a 66, followed by Jenna Yilek and Rachel Slifer with 70s and Maya Goos with a 72.

North Tama didn’t have a team score but Molly Vogeler had the 13th-best individual score with a 56 for the Redhawks.
