GMG nets 21 hits in loss to Rebels

GREEN MOUNTAIN — The GMG softball team got within one swing of erasing a double-digit deficit, falling to Gladbrook-Reinbeck 16-15 on Friday night.

The visiting Rebels led by as many as 10 runs in the early stages of their season-opener before GMG (0-3) rallied back to make it a nail-biter. The Wolverines trailed 16-10 heading to the bottom of the seventh inning before scoring five times, stranding the potential tying run on base.

Emily Vaughn took the loss for the GMG pitching staff, allowing eight runs while walking seven in her only inning of work. Kelsey Vaverka struck out seven but walked eight in six innings off the bench.

Zoe Duncan, Belle Duncan, Vaughn and Vaverka each had three of GMG’s 21 hits. Vaughn had two doubles, two RBIs and four runs scored, while Vaverka had a double and three RBIs. Belle Duncan had a double, two RBIs and three runs scored, and Marriah Stonewall added a double and two RBIs.

GMG visits Traer on Tuesday for an Iowa Star Conference South Division clash with Colo-NESCO.
