MHS netters swept aside by Tigers

CEDAR FALLS — Playing a day ahead of schedule didn’t help the Marshalltown girls tennis team catch Cedar Falls off guard.

The Tigers were clearly ready for their Class 2A Region 4 semifinal, firing off five-straight dominant wins to defeat the Bobcats 5-0 in Friday’s dual meet.

The dual was originally scheduled for Saturday morning in Cedar Falls but moved up a day to avoid expected wet weather conditions. They got the meet in, but it just ended the Bobcats’ season a day sooner.

The Tigers (16-1) won all five singles matches in straight sets, relinquishing no more than one game per set to their Marshalltown counterparts. Bobcat junior Grace Fisher was the only Bobcat tennis player to take more than one game in her match, but she was trailing Elena Escalada 6-1, 4-1 when the meet reached its best-of-nine outcome.

Krisha Keeran toppled Emily Miller at No. 1 singles by 6-0, 6-0 sets, and Vipsa Dodiya did the same to Hel Ter at No. 6. Mary Kate Gruening lost 6-0, 6-1 to Mira Keeran at No. 2, Madi Finch fell 6-1, 6-0 to Malina Amjadi at No. 3, and Olivia Brintnall was toppled 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4 singles by Jamie Knox.

Knox was the only Cedar Falls player the Bobcats saw earier in the week at the 2A regional singles and doubles tournament hosted by the Tigers, when Knox eliminated Fisher from singles competition by a score of 6-1, 6-2.
