SPORTS SHORTS: Bobcat girls lose late to Scarlets

DES MOINES — The Marshalltown girls soccer team lost a close battle to Des Moines East on Friday, falling 1-0 in two overtimes.

The Scarlets (3-7) ended the game with a goal with six minutes left in the final overtime period.

Emma Lizarde led the Bobcats (1-8) with two shots on goal, and MHS had five total shots on goal. Avygail Smith finished the game with 21 total saves, 20 of which came before overtime.

“The girls played awesome I am absolutely proud of every single one of my girls,” Marshalltown head girls soccer coach Leigh Hornbuckle said. “This has been a very tough season for us with the amount of away games, compared to our very few home games spirits are kind a low but the girls are fighting through it and they’re playing their absolute best.”

The Bobcats finally return home on Tuesday when they host Mason City, starting at 7:30 p.m.

East Marshall girls golf falls to Spartans

GRUNDY CENTER — The East Marshall girls golf team fell to Grundy Center in a dual at Town & Country Golf Club on Friday, 201-236.

Kayla Mommer was the top scorer for the Mustangs with a 54, and she was followed by Jazzy Leavy and Rachael McAnulty with 58s each and Kennedy Boliver with a 66.

Frannie Brown was the meet medalist for the Spartans with a 48, and Josie Holke-Farnam was the meet runner-up with a 49.

Mustang boys bested by Grundy Center

GRUNDY CENTER — The East Marshall boys golf team lost to Grundy Center in a dual at Town & Country Golf Club on Friday, 176-214.

Brayden Fahrni shot the low score for the Mustangs with a 49, and he was followed by Seth Freese with a 51, Ethan Espenscheid with a 54 and Toby Ryan with a 60.

Andy Cox won the meet medalist honors for the Spartans with a 43, and Ashton Martens was the runner-up with a 44.
