SPORTS SHORTS: GC/G-R netters notch sixth-straight win

GRUNDY CENTER — The Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck girls tennis team ran its win streak to six meets with Thursday’s 7-2 dual victory over South Hardin.

The host Spartans (6-1) have won six-straight by at least a 7-2 margin, improving to 3-0 in North Iowa Cedar League action.

The Spartans won five of six singles matches and two of three doubles bouts, highlighted by singles shutouts for Reegan Zinkula at No. 2 and Alivia Brandhorst at No. 6. Zinkula stifled Emma Spieker 8-0, while Brandhorst blanked Katelyn Nathis as well. Emerson Kracht came up with an 8-1 win over Sarah England at No. 3, and Whitney Laube won 8-5 at No. 5.

Leslie Homeister won all seven points of a tiebreaker to defeat Meghan Van De Pol 9-8 (7-0) at the top singles spot. South Hardin’s lone singles win came from Alexis Bradshaw with an 8-4 triumph over Erika Johnson at No. 4.

Homeister and Zinkula captured an 8-3 win over Van De Pol and Spieker at No. 1 doubles, while Kracht and Johnson captured an 8-2 win on England and Bradshaw at No. 2. The visiting Tigers (5-3) got the third doubles bout, as Isabelle Sissons and Mathis edged Laube and Brandhorst, 9-8 (8-6).

BCLUW’s Stanley medals, Trojans win

STATE CENTER — BCLUW’s Lane Stanley scored medalist honors with his 2-over-par 37 but West Marshall won the boys golf dual on Thursday night, beating the Comets 174-193 on the back nine at Lincoln Valley Golf Course.

Stanley had a five-stroke advantage as the low scorer for the NICL West Division dual, but none of his teammates were within 13 strokes of him. All six West Marshall golfers scored between Stanley and the rest of the Comets.

Counting scores for the Trojans came from Jake Vawter and Caleb Keigan (42), Conley Petermeier (44), and Jordan Sogge and Joey Tollefson (46).

Contributing for BCLUW were Stanley (37), Kade Pekarek (50), and Ray Callaway and Isaac Kopsa (53).

Gladbrook-Reinbeck didn’t factor into either the individual or team race. Tyson Creswell shot a 57 and Trey Eggers carded a 61 for the Rebels.

Comets sweep conference triangular

STATE CENTER — The BCLUW girls golf team recorded the five lowest scores in sweeping all the hardware at an NICL West Division triangular on Thursday at Lincoln Valley Golf Course.

The Comets comfortably won the team title with their 195 total, defeating host West Marshall (232) as well as Gladbrook-Reinbeck (235).

BCLUW’s Jaelyn Allen was the meet medalist with a 7-over-par 42, while Bailey Ashton was the runner-up with a 50. Skye Teckenburg shot a 51 and Kennedy Williams came in with a 52 for the Comets.

Karisa Blocker and Jaiden Hart both shot 54 to lead West Marshall, while Reagan Skovgard carded 54 and Ella Murphy a 56 for the Rebels.

East Marshall splits dual with AGWSR

Jazy Leavy won meet medalist honors by a comfortable nine strokes and the East Marshall girls golf team defeated AGWSR in Thursday’s NICL West Division dual at Wandering Creek Golf Course.

The Mustangs shot a 226 to AGWSR’s 239, as East Marshall’s scoring rounds included Leavy’s 45 as well as a 58 from Rachael McAnulty, Kayla Mommer’s 60 and a 63 from Cami Weeks.

AGWSR’s Kinzie Kielty was runner-up with her 54, Hannah Homeyer finished at 55, while Alayna Hunt and Morgan Roelfs both shot 65 to round out the Cougars’ scoring.

On the boys’ side, Eric Ommen won meet medalist for the East Marshall boys, but AGWSR captured the rest of the honors. Alex Hames was runner-up and the Cougars won the conference dual, 192-197.

Ethan Espenscheid (51), Brayden Fahrni (52) and Seth Freese (53) had their scores count for East Marshall, while Daniel Stahl (48), Trey Lashbrook (49) and Riley Sicard (50) contributed for the Cougars.

GMG boys golfers second at Iowa Star

WATERLOO — The GMG boys golf team had three all-conference medalists in finishing second at the Iowa Star Conference tournament on Wednesday at Red Carpet Golf Course.

The Wolverines totaled 358 as a team, trailing only Don Bosco’s 336 in the final standings of the nine-team event. Tripoli (384) held off North Tama (389) for third place.

Aaron Fleming led GMG by finishing fifth with his round of 86. Ryan Hunt and Blaze Krull were one spot back in tying for sixth with rounds of 89. Brayden Peterson contributed the final counting score for the Wolverines, placing 13th with a 94.

North Tama’s Paden Ketter came away with runner-up medalist honors with his 9-over-par 81, just one stroke back of Don Bosco’s Jack Kelley for the top spot.

Also scoring for North Tama were Andrew Lidgett and Skyler Staker with 99s, and Jack Dostal and Michael Bell with 109s.

ISU Tailgate Tour to visit Marshalltown

AMES — The 2019 Iowa State Tailgate Tour is coming to Marshalltown.

Iowa State head coaches Matt Campbell (football), Steve Prohm (men’s basketball), Bill Fennelly (women’s basketball), Christy Johnson-Lynch (volleyball) and Kevin Dresser (wrestling), along with athletic director Jamie Pollard, will be at the Emerson Innovation Center (301 S. 1st Ave.) at noon on May 22.

The group travels on from Marshalltown for a 5:30 p.m. engagement at the National Cattle Congress in Waterloo.

AMES — The Iowa State men’s basketball team will be traveling overseas this summer for a 10-day trip to Italy with three games scheduled against international competition.

The trip is slated for August 10-20 starting in Rome with stops in Florence, Pisa and Venice. The games and opponents have not yet been scheduled, but tentative dates and locations are Aug. 13 in Rome, Aug. 15 in Pisa and Aug. 18 in Vicenza.

This marks the fourth summer trip in program history. The Cyclones previously visited Mexico (2004), Italy (2011) and Spain (2015).
